Airsoft Equipment Specials / Re: Tactical Tailor Sale
« on: July 24, 2009, 06:07:26 AM »
Tac Tailor is one of my favorite gear manufacturers. Worked with them directly when I worked at an airsoft shop back east, they are a great company, and their products are top notch, American made stuff. Good timing too, I need a new radio pouch. Thanks for the heads up!

Get a 2S lipo with a good C rating. Beyond that its just a question of how much you want to spend and what space you have to put it in. For a stock gun a 2S lipo would be fine, no need to go for a 3 cell 11.1v.

Notice that the same philosophy on gear here nets 2 totally different approaches... I run a battle belt with not much more than mags, a dump pouch, a few extra bb's and an extra battery. Camelback for hydration. Super light and fast, and I never really feel like I am lacking anything.

Sounds like that's working for you.  Why bother with a new setup?

It does work great, I'm not looking at a new rig, just trying to help this kid figure out how to choose tac gear.

I have never, and will never recommend buying gear without trying it on... There is SO much personal preference involved here. Only you know what will work for you, but maybe I can help steer you in the right direction...

Is this your first foray into tactical gear?
If so,

How do you generally play? What guns do you carry with you? How many mags? How do you carry water? What other gear do you carry?

These are the kind of questions I would want answers to before I even tried to give you a recommendation...

I went through 3 or 4 vests until I settled on my current rig... and god knows how many times I reconfigured each rig.

For that reason, I do suggest you look at some of the modular gear. I understand you are on a budget, but you should be able to build a nice vest for not too much money...

AEG's / Re: short stroking

Did it for a customer once... very specific request I wouldn't normally do, as I never really could notice much difference myself. Basically you file off teeth from the head end of the piston, allowing it to release from the sector gear a bit sooner, thus creating a shorter stroke. Keep in mind that only 2-3 teeth on both the sector gear and piston are actually bearing any tension at any given point in time through the cycle, so you are not going to increase stress. From a theoretical standpoint this will decrease FPS because the spring is not fully compressed, thus it releases less energy. It should also increase ROF, as the shorter time to stroke the piston translates directly to ROF. However, as I said before, I never really noticed a whole lot of difference, but I only did 2 teeth.

My tech mentor once used a short stroke to solve an issue with a gun that was eating pistons... the gears were moving so fast when released that tooth 1 on the sector gear would strike the teeth on the piston before it was fully forward. Short stroking solved this by letting the piston go sooner, thus it was able to stroke fully before the sector gear came back around. Its a 1 off situation, but its also the only time I think it was necessary to do a short stroke.

I hope that helps answer some of your questions! If it doesn't, feel free to keep picking my brains.

Introduce Yourself! / Hey there, Wallaby here

Hi everyone,

I have been into airsoft for years, even worked in the sport for a while. I am from Georgia, but I will be in AZ for a few months working, and I am planning on taking the opportunity to experience some new fields, see what the sport is like out west. And since I am driving I get to bring all (well, some) of my gear!

I am a head moderator over at Peach State Airsoft, a community forum very similar to what you have here, but for the state of GA. I typically play at Georgia Airsoft, but I have been to games all throughout the Southeast. Anyone here played back east?

I will be in the Phoenix area and I would love to hear some recommendations for places to play near by.

Thanks,
Wallaby
