Question about this picture
« on: February 05, 2007, 09:42:36 AM »

Is this a fairly common instance? I've never seen pictures of anyone who wasn't in the U.S. Army wearing ACUs while in Iraq. If I was in that guy's position I would not want to be mistaken for a combatant.

Are you sure he's in Iraq, that looks like the DOD's flag in the background of that picture.  Is it right? Obviously lol.  I doubt insurgents care if its a non com or a military person wearing what.  So long as he is from the US hes a target.  Either way if it is in Iraq it looks like the Navy knows what cammo works :P

Look at his name badge...  It reads:

DOD Civilian

I think that answers the question.

Which is why we're wondering why he's wearing ACUs.

My guess would be for appearances sake.  Meeting with brass from Iraq, so he decided to dress for the occasion.  Either that or he didn't know better.  lol.

1st, examining what I can see of the flag in the background I'd say that is the flag of the Merchant Marines.

2nd, even though he's a civilian we have no idea what his occupation is. We also have no idea if it's a common practice for civilians over there to be wearing camo of any type.

I'm also wondering about the guy in tactical gear that you see in the background. Of course the guys at mp.net have a running joke that anyone who looks tactical, but wears civies and Oakleys is actually a Delta Force operator.

It's also very possible that private contractors hired by the DoD are considered DoD civilians. It'd explain the uniform, and also the operator in the back.

A DoD civilian is not a contractor.
A DoD civilian is someone officially on the government payscale generally GS or GG person.

We had one working with us when I was deployed and he wore the uniform with DoD Civilian name tape.  He said it was a choice between regular clothes or the uniform which they are authorized to wear provided the DoD tape goes over where US Army would be.

In our guys case he didn't want to wear the suits and stuff he normally sported back in the states so went with the camo.

Was in a rush typing this and didn't read everyones posts but I hope that cleared up something for at least one person.

Edit:  I followed that link saying it is in Baghdad.  So that's established it is over somewhere else, but the badge hanging below his ID card around his neck also gives a clue that it isn't here in the states beyond that I may get hollered at for OPSEC stuff.

These kind of comments always make me wonder why no one knows what a STO is.

If I was an american civilian in Iraq and worked for the government in the ebmassy, it would make things a lot easier for american soldiers to recognize me in the face of possible enemy hostility, and therefore get me to safety.
