The Ghillie Suit Tut
« on: July 21, 2008, 10:32:49 PM »
Ok, everyone wants one so you all can.

List of materials
BDU's, ACU's, ABU's, MARPAT, DCU's (or any kind of military uniform/Base in the color of your area of operation)
Burlap Sack/Jute Twine (Both can be found at Wally World or the Internet, Need about 5 lb. of it)
Die of your color choices (Rie die works awesome I prefer liquid because it gets in the burlap (Which is 100% Jute in most cases) better than dry
Netting(I think Fishing net, works best can be found at Wally World at 6 bucks for variable sizes)
Floss (Waxed scented doesn’t really matter)
Sewing needle (Bigger hole the better)
Shoe Gloo or GOOP (Strong sealant or glue works the best)
A lot of time, 40 hours plus

1. Get materials

2. Cut Burlap into 16"-24" Squares/ Unravel the jute pull it apart (If more than 1 ply) and cut into same sizes as burlap

3. All the color parts are up to you (I had 16 16" squares so I did 8 Tan/Yellow, 5 Sage/Tan and 3 Brown

4. Dry out the Jute in the sun for a few hours

5. Sew the netting on your base (Long work part is here) use glue to make the sow stronger

6. Take 3 strands and make a loop take it put it through the bottom of a line of netting pull out through the top and take the 6 strings of burlap and feed it through the loop(If that did make sense ill look up a diagram)

Here's another tutorial (the one I plan to follow):

Click on "Long Range Tactical Shooting" at the bottom, and in the left column on the next page "Ghillie Suit."

I followed this one to a point. Ganef and I made my cobra hood by sewing up a cape smock of sorts with a hood and then sewing a dense, nylon cargo net to it. We tied jute and other things to it from there. For airsoft, I don't think full ghillies are necessary -- a hood with sleeves will definitely get the trick.

I never thought about using netting...good idea...maybe even cut up some mil vehicle netting for use as a base.

Here's a picture illustrating it's general construction. The right arm (left in the picture) has been significantly shaved since then.

That gun also doesn't look that gay anymore. Here's what the weapon of a serious airball killer looks like when using a ghillie suit.

Nice work on the suit.  Same goes for the weapon; did you use the fishnet/laundry bag method?  I've been meaning to try that out...

Airsofter1 is Asian, and as such, has a very deft hand (his ancestors worked on the railroad, they had to be quick), he used a small brush to do the detail.

I guess, in retrospect, a laundry bag would have been better.
