Better box mag for M249?
« on: June 15, 2012, 05:28:23 PM »
I have the stock mag that comes with the A&K Mk 46 of course, but I'm getting a bit annoyed at how bulky it is (although it only holds 500 more rounds than the smaller CA boxes), and it is driving me just crazy enough to start asking around.  I've looked and can't seem to find the CA box mags in stock anywhere and I'm wondering if anybody else uses a 249, 240B, or M60 and has any ideas for ammunition storage on those platforms.

As far as I know, the nutsack mags are still the way to go for 249's.

I'd go with the CA249 1200rnd Box mag.  It's the 100 round soft bag, so it's smaller making it easier to manuver the weapon around.  Also the side loading door is the largest access door that I am aware of, making loading a little easier than other brands.  One recommendation on these things is to not leave it in auto mode as they tend too keep winding the gears to tighten the spring which tends to lead to a bb getting jammed in the loading sprocket. It's best just bump the switch on/off manually from time to time to keep the mag wound.

Where to get one?  A lot of manufacturer's lately are just not making product available. I'd hit up Ron at the Gearbox, pending his recovery after he gets out of the hospital, to see if he can get his hands on one for you.
