Is this a paypal scam?
« on: October 09, 2013, 11:21:21 AM »
I have a gun listed on another forum for sale.  Package is around $500 bucks.  I requested a paypal as a gift to avoid any fees and from what I understand there is less of a chance of dispute that way.  The buyer on the forum sent his shipping info and the name is different from the paypal gift info.  Is this a scam of some sort?

I'd ask him why it's different and see what he says.  I've placed orders online before under my account for people and had them pay with their info.

Yeah funds were sent as a gift.  I pm'd him and he stated it was being shipped to a friends house.  Is there any way to dispute a paypal gift?

I wouldn't do it. If its under gift it is not attached to the item, so yes he can easily scam you. Sounds like he is using somone else's account to commit a crime. Happens a lot.

What's there to dispute?  Funds were sent.  In regards to your question.

13.3 Ineligible Items. PayPal Purchase Protection only applies to PayPal payments for certain tangible, physical goods. Payments for the following are not eligible for reimbursement under PayPal Purchase Protection:
 •Intangible items, including Digital Goods
 •Services
 •Real estate, including residential property
 •Businesses
•Vehicles, including motor vehicles, motorcycles, caravans, aircraft and boats
 •Custom-made items
•Travel tickets, including airline flight tickets
•Items prohibited by the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy
•Items which you collect in person or arrange to be collected on your behalf, including items bought through In-Store Checkout at the retail point of sale
•Items that violate eBay’s Prohibited or Restricted Items Policy
 •Industrial machinery used in manufacturing
•Items equivalent to cash, including prepaid or gift cards
 •PayPal Direct Payments
 •Virtual Terminal Payments
 •Personal Payments

The last option is the "gift" option.  He's gifted the money to you.  That's a done deal.  There's nothing to scam.  You on the other hand could just not ship the items since legally he was sending you a gift.

Gifting through paypal is considered by most buyer's as a scam because you cannot dispute anything.

If you received payment as a gift, you could send him a box of potatoes, and all paypal would do would be to praise him on his generous gift.

It is probably legit.
