Probably because you already have a fast processor. This is a good trick if your cpu is closer to the minimum specs. This is a good idea for some and a really bad one for others...
Updating my video card drivers (Nvidia just put out new ones on the 27th) and turning on vsync helped me out a ton already. I don't have anti-aliasing turned on at all and it looks fine. It would appear that DOOM3 doesn't need AA enabled to look smooth. This was discussed in a HardOCP article a couple days ago.
If you want a good way to compare your different configs, just pull down the console (now "hidden" with "ctrl-alt-`") and type benchmark.
