If you plan to hunt other big game in the future such as Elk the I'd get the 7mm mag.  Otherwise 30-06 is more than sufficient for deer size game.

30-06 and .308 are sufficient for deer. Like Harley said, anything bigger you oughta get the 7mm mag. If you're going to use the rifle for target practice alot, also, the .308 is cheap to shoot and the 30-06 ain't bad either. Not sure on the 7mm mag.

Fist off Congratulations on your Draw, And Welcome to the the Ranks of Hunters. Second a good Source of hunting info on the state of Az and in genreal is http://www.azod.com and their forums http://www.azodchat.com/default.asp

Lastly IT doesn't matter what caliber you use to hunt with if
#1 you aren't comfertable with it!
-By comfertable I mean that you can shoot it and not be scared of the recoil, you know where it hits from hours on the range, and you feel confindent in the weapon in both accuracy and nockdown potental.
#2 You don't shoot past your Limits!
- Everyone has there maximum shooting distance for various cercumstances. From a prone position I am more than confindant out to and maybe a lil past 400m, but that comes from years of shooting out to that distance. But when hunting I noramally keep my shots less than 200 because most shots are offhand and unsupported. Find the range you feel confidant before the season starts

#3 you select the right Bullet type for the Caliber Selected.
- I hunt elk and deer with my .308 and my 30-06, all I do is switch bullet wieghts and types for the different animals. For elk you want a slow expanding bullet to punch thru that tough hide, for thinner (and skinner) deer you want a more rappidly expanding bullet. Used to it required a lot of research or trial and error to figure out which was better, but now most Ammunition companies now lable the box with  either lil pictures of the size of animal the bullet is desined for or they have a label telling you which round is for what weight size.

Finally the 30-06 or 7mm Mag both are great rounds, thousands of hunters use both on deer and elk everyear. Take a cruse by your local gun shop and check out several in each caliber and pick the rifle that fits you best. Used to I would have reccomended the 30-06 over the 7 simply becasue ammo was easier to find for it compared to the 7mm Mag, but anymore you don't have to worry about that, but you will find more "cheap" 30-06 from military surplus which does help with the costs of practice.

Let us know how it turns out and Good Luck![:)]

PS: Also if your like me and hunting for that super tastey venison, small is better! Why you may ask? Lost meat, when you use that large Magnium round you will have a much larger wound cavity, good to ensure quick death, but bad for your over edible meat count due to lead fragments left in that cavity. With a smaller lighter round bullet placement is Paramont, but you can still take game, with one shot, and you will loose less meat due to the wound cavity.

You can get pretty much any rifle you want in a synthetic stock.  Browning, Remington, Winchester, etc.  Figure out what the max amount you're willing to spend on the rifle is.  Then start pricing the different brands to see what fits your wallet.  Don't forget to budget for a decent scope, rings and mounts too.  Some mfg's supply the rings and mounts with their guns, some don't so look for that as well.

Also Savage Arms which makes some really nice weapons for great prices (ie cheaper than most other manufactures) often has some really nice package deals. Used to you could pick up a model 110F with rings,  with/with-out a decent scope for about $350-$450 and they are still tack drivers! Course this was early last year when I looked at them, Before they brought out their new Accu-Tirgger, so it may have gone up.

Good Advice, also remember in any caliber that you get, the lighter the weapon the easier it is to carry all day, BUT! Felt Recoil will be worse. IF you want an example try trading a full walnut stocked Lee-enfield in .303 British to one of those synthetice "sporter" stocks, looks great, and makes the rifle a breeze to carry, but DAMN does it buck like a mule![B)]

I never fired a 30-06 or 7mm so that is why I ask which is the way to start... I am not afraid of recoil... but I know i need and want lots of range time.

You can do the same thing and add a recoil reducer.  The BOSS system works, so that's an option.  30-06 is probably a good way to go.  You can get loads with many different bullet weights and types to work with what ever game you plan to hunt.  It's a good all around caliber.  Do a search on ballistic comparisons between the two cartidges.  Any reason you picked those two and not any others?

If it's a good price you might just want to grab the .06 then.

Im gonna hunt deer for first time this year, I know NOTHING about hunting firearms  30-06 vs 7mm mag...

I hear both mentioned but do not know which way to go.  I am not a fan of engravings and wood grain otherwise the browning 7mm mag safari would have a new owner...  what do you guys recoomend and is there any that are tactical looking like the benelli nova pump shotguns which I currently own? I liek the flat vlackness look to it and want rifle similar.
