The Flip up "Iron sights" were a user inputed Modification, along with several others (see Army times from early Sept). The Rifle itself isn't the problem, it is the round that most people, esp the end use has issues with. Those that love the 5.56 are those that have never had to use it for anything other than either paper or varments. I've heard of folks hunting deer and hog's with it but it is rare, on small game it is EXPLOSIVE according to what I've heard. In balistic gelitin tests I've seen all 5.56 takes approx 6" before any tumble or fragmitation happens and then the fragmitation is limited the further away the target is. Targets at or past 300m may have ZERO frag, and only minor tumbling, even though it will penitrate 12" or more! Needling doesn't stop the enemy, large mass trama does, wounding enemy theroies isn't effective against those that do not care about losses only stopping them all in their tracks. With out a reason to change rounds I still do not see a reason to change weapon platforms, with different uppers you can have pistol, SMG, belt fed LMG, Assualt Rifle, Carbine, and grenader systems with the M-16/ M4.

As an Airsoft weapon of course caliber doens't matter it is all 6mm or 8mm (8 in pistols mostly) and if your shooting hot enough to penitrate 12" of flesh you need to pull that M20000 spring out![:P] Over all if an AEG verson was avail off the self I think it might be somewhat of a seller, just like the G36. as a plus it would open the door for OCIW type addons for those that like those mosnters.[V]

Edit- yes according to the Army times they were suppost to issue out XM-8's to select troops for feild evaluations starting this fall. So there MAY alread be some seeing action he in Iraq.

It has been said that switching to 6.8 caliber is a simple act of replacing certain parts on the M4/M16 series.  Is the same true for the XM8?

The change to 6.8 on a M16 only requires a barrel and a magazine change as far as I know...I could be completely wrong tho..

Yeah, the 5.56 works Ok as long as your using ball ammuntion. Thing is I heard that alot of guys were getting the armor piercing rounds which goes through a human body like a laser beam. So, unless you hit something critical, the stuff won't stop much. The 5.56 was adopted originally so that the soldier could carry twice as much ammo as their 7.62 counterpart. We were more worried about volume of fire as we thought we might be up against the Soviets. Now, however, maybe its just me, but we seem much more worried about civilian casulties. The nature of our battles is changed, at least for the meantime. Thus, a well-aimed shot is much more preferable. Like I said before, I don't know much about the 6.8, so I can't make a judgement there. What should we go to? I really don't know at this point.

Yeah, in order to convert to the 6.8 all they need to do is change the bolt, and the barrel. But wouldnt they have to change the entire upper reciever due to the larger size of the shell casing? I mean, when the round is fired will it properly leave the rifle, or is it too big for a larger round to exit?

5.56 is a great cartridge when using hollow points.  Those suckers just explode when the hit something.  We use to hunt Woodchucks back in NY with 22.250's and that's the same bullet that the 5.56 uses, just a larger cartridge pushing it up to 4000fps.  You can hear that round SMACK when it hits one of those furry little crtters.  Opens them up like you just unzipped em!

What about the accuracy and distance for hollow points? Isn't it reduced?

Well it does just fine at 200 yards on Woodchucks.  But yes, hollow points tend be less accurate, but we're talking maybe a 1/4 inch difference at 100 yards.
