In the military, in all services or just one, are you allowed to choose which weapon you serve with? I.E. M4A1 instead of the M16A2?

Unless things have changed, not usually.  Rank of course can have its privleges.  Typically though, the only thing you got to choose about was if you wanted to use a 9mm or a .45 for your pistol.

Not nowadays.  9mm is the only choice for a pistol.  And most active duty units are switching over to the M4 because of the type of gunfights we are seeing in Iraq.  There are some units still deploying with M16a2s, but mostly not by choice, there simply arent enough M4s to go around.

You do not get to choose what weapon you are issued. There are some guys that sit behind a desk that get issued M249s. Only people that would get to choose would be officers and such(even then...).
