Nitrogen does not expand as much as other gases.  That's why we fill our Aircraft tires with it.

Paintballers use it, but they also use compressed air.  For airsoft, where the gas must fit into a very small magazine, then expand greatly, we need gases like refrigerants.

HFC134a, HFC22, and even Propane are used as refrigerants in the aviation industry.

They are used for aisroft guns because of the enormous expansion rate.  

Another gas that I've wondered about using is Butane.  If I'm not mistaken, it is stored under lower pressure than propane, so it probably would not work.

I've tried butane. Butane is definitly a no-go. There is not enough compression in the can to move the slide far enough to cycle the bbs through it, but it might work inside of a nbb.
Benz sells pure oxygen in a tank that has the same head as a propane tank. I know it won't expand much in a gun, but I might pick some up and screw on that convientient propane adapter and give it a try. 8 bucks a tank is worth a shot. I'll keep you guys posted on that one.

I used to have an Annhilator, a .BB submachine gun made in the late 1970's. It ran on R-12 Freon. Back then, R-12 was something like .75 cents a can.

Not to metion that its now a federal crime to vent R12 into the atmospehere. Its so expensive now because the environmentalists made it illegal to produce, and illegal to dispose of. Every bit of it still in existance has to be bottled up to be taken out of a system. Its kind of bullshit with the "greehouse gases" and the ozone hogwash that made 134a replace the much more efficient freon system.

Airsofters have probably put a damn good sized dent in the O zone...I know I have probably gone through 10 or 12 red gas cans in the last year...and probably twice that in GG...
