Airsoft at the Hollywood Sports Park
« on: August 21, 2005, 07:43:01 PM »
On Friday, August 19, I had the opportunity to play some great airsoft at the Hollywood Sports Park (HSP) in Bellflower, CA. The park is about 15 minutes away from Disneyland. Airsoft is a recent addition to the adventures that guests can enjoy at the HSP. The location features paintball, rock climbing, soccer, beach volley ball, as well as other "extreme" sports.

Even though the other sports sound interesting, I was there just for the airsoft. The cost was $20 to play from 4pm - 10 pm. About every other Sunday, guests can play all day for only $25. Friday, there were about 25 people playing along with me. I must admit that I was one of only a few adults playing that night. The youngest player on the field was 10 and the majority were teens (16-17).

Although the players were young, the action was intense and fun. We played on three different fields each about 20,000 sq feet. Imagine playing in a middle eastern city (Apocalypse), an ancient temple (Forbidden City), and a destroyed factory area (Mad Max). If you are a fan of CQB, the Hollywood Sports Park is definitely worth the trip.

Our teams played two games on each field before rotating to the next area. Games were 15 minutes long, and single hit elimination. As soon as the first game ended, teams would switch sides and run up another game. There was very little down time between games, as little as 10 minutes. I played a total of 10 games during my four hour visit.

The only major issues that I had during my visit were:
1) There is a huge amount of paint from the paintball games covering almost everything. I didn't have a problem as I train to stay off the walls. However, most of the new players were literally slimed by the end of the evening.

2) Players are required to wear a full style paintball mask for safety purposes. I know many airsoft players who think fashion is more important than safety (or the excuse that they can't use their weapon sight with paintball masks). So this safety rule would drive many players away.

Aside from these small areas, I found the fields quite exciting and worth my $20 during my visit. To get into the action visit www.hollywoodsports.com

Thanks for the Information. Sounds like a neat place to check out sometime when in the area.  Was the floor concrete and did you have any problems sliding on the paint?

It was once believed that Chuck Norris actually lost a fight to a
pirate, but that is a lie, created by Chuck Norris himself to lure more pirates to him. Pirates never were very smart.

The floors on all of the fields are dirt so traction is really not an issue for playing there.  However, there are a few structures in the Mad Max field that are made of steel (box cars and ramps) that can be slippery from the paint.

As for playing with the younger crowd.  I found all of the younger players had their parents with them and I had a chance to talk to the parents about the importance of safety and good sportsmanship.  Most of the parents thought that bringing their kids to the field was a great alternative to backyard airsofting and had fun watching their kids play.  I spoke with one father during our breaks who related that he used the field as a "reward" for his son for doing well in school and chores.

My experience was made more enjoyable by the younger players on that evening of play.  Of course, my visit was just for one day, so I can't say it will always be like this for future visits.  I would definitely try the field at least once.

I would love to get a group of AZ players to visit the field and play as a team.
