uniform/BDU question
« on: October 13, 2005, 05:40:35 PM »
Greetings all

I have a question to ask of the forum folk here.  My teamcaptain and LT. have decided for our team (about 8-10 of us at full strength at current) to go with black boots, black bdu pants, and navy blue bdu shirt with any webgear/LBE vests packs etc also being black, and a navy blue pasgt helmet with either full paintball mask, or goggles & black balaclava.

Our 2nd uniform is the terrorist/mid east tannish rebel insurgent style complete with the head rag thingy(forget its name atm)

The point of the matter is, our team voted itself to be basically resident badguys or thugs for anyone to make use of, or Cobra goon troopers from the old tvshow.  But in every instance of scenarios it shows that the uniform specs only allow for green VS tan......with ACU sometimes.  I'm not familiar with the term ACU.  But it seems as if our team will either be associated with the green-team,  or be not allowed via lack of appropriate uni colors.

Our team wants to have fun with everyone, but we aren't hardcore milsim due to our age and variance of sizes.  We're a bunch of 30 year olds who want to look the part, but aren't in the shape to be milspec looking (super healthy trim and fit etc)  hence our approach as career baddies

The question is mainly, will we be welcomed to play? and how are non tan/green bdu's grouped teamwise?  Thankyou for any information of assistance you may provide us.

Of course you'd be welcome to games. No one really cares what your uniform is. It just makes things easier for everyone to identify who you are in the heat of battle. Friendly fire really sucks. The non tan or green people will be split up to even the teams. Something is always worked out. As long as you show up your welcome to play. It may help to at least have a light color uniform if you want to lean more towards Tan. Also think about how your colors are going to help you hide. I've had guys walk by me at a 15ft distance without knowing I was there (in tall dead grass) when wearing my Desert (DCU's) camo.

Hey! I'm with War Savage, of course you'll be welcome.

FWIW, black clothing is hot in the Summertime, and if it's a night game, you're gonna stand out against the lighter (greys) background. Outside of that, it'll make for a EEEvil looking team.

It's how you play as a team rather than how you look. Call yourselves out when hit, play honorably.. And everyone will be happy to play with you.

First of all, I think that is a fantastic idea.

Second, rather than incorporate you guys into the existing green or tan teams, I think the best course of action would be to create a third group much like "Shadow Squad" of the Lion Claws series National OPs that we all love so much.

Will you be welcome?  As someone who enjoys the MilSim aspect as much as everyone else (if not more) I can say that what you are doing is a great idea.  Rather than (like you said) having a bunch of guys of various size, age, and uniform running around, you are incorporating yourself into a distinctive group.  So, without a doubt, YES - you will be welcome! ;)

To answer a couple of your questions:

The arabic head scarf is usually referred to as a Shemagh (pronounced shuh - mag by all of us non-farsie speakers).  You will find it called a Keffeyah (Kah-fee-yah) sometimes as well, but that is kind of a different article of clothing.  The more you research, you will find that each different color represents something.  If you are going for a bad-guy look, stay away from than tan and OD versions, as these are typically not worn by Arabic fighters.  Red and white, or black and white are good choices, the latter blending in a bit better than "shoot-me red."

Another good piece of kit for your bad-guy garb would be the ChiCom AK47 chest rig.  It's the Green chest rig that you see almost every islamic insurgent wearing, and they can be had for around 15 bucks each.  They will hold 3 AK mags, or 6 M16 mags, and have other pockets for a couple frags or a bag of BBs.  Here's a few pics:

That's me at an old AA game.  They are sometimes worn by US forces in the Mid East as well.

There's one with a red shemagh and a pakol.  The latter is a wool hat worn by Afghan Fighters, and found in older pics of Special Forces soldiers in Afghanistan shortly after 9/11.  Pakol is pronounced "Pah-Kool".

ACU is the new Army Combat Uniform.  pythonline posted a pic of the early version of the uniform.  ACU is often used to describe the camoflage pattern (which is referred to as "Universal Pattern" by the military and the gear industry).  It is a blend of Tan, Grey, and Green much like the Marines' MARPAT.  Good stuff!

So, if you have any other questions feel free to PM me, any of the other Mods, or post them here.  Again, welcome and good luck getting everything together!

If you guys ever wanted to have several sets of uniforms you can visit US Surplus on 35th Ave and Osborn.  I personally have woodland, and DCU's (Desert Combat Uniform) so that I can be on either team that I choose to be on.  Why we use these two uniform set ups is because it is a lot better way to decern teams instead of using an arm band of some kind. We all hate the arm band : )  And generally most people had either woodland or DCUs so those naturally became the too team colors.  Tan vs Green.   As long as you are wearing colors that resemble that teams color you should be ok.  And as Christian mentioned above, we maybe able to use your team with your uniforms as a third faction like shadow squad.  This could make for some interesting games ; )

I think you're missing his point, Ryan.

He was asking what team they'd be on if they wore black/blue.  It's not that they can't find BDUs and DCUs, just that they are going to be different.

Oh right     I've only been working 11hr days hehe.   Yeah good question, what team would they be on if they only wore black and blue.  As you said they would have to be their own unit, as they are, and play like a shadow team.  Just make sure to notify the organizer, letting him know how many of you would be attending.  This way the organizer can incorperate a third team into the scenerios.  This could be fun  :)

Razi, like the others have mentioned, the Tan vs. Green patterns uniforms is to make it easy to identify friend or foe during play.  It seems to be the preferred method for identifying teammates over using the dreaded colored duct tape wrapped around the arm by most players around these parts.  But with the introduction of some new "universal" camo patterns things get a little more difficult.  There is the new Army universal pattern (ACU) and Multicam.
For those players wanting to wear these patterns to our regular games I just try to keep them all grouped together when placing them on a team.  I would do the same if all of your teammates really wanted to wear a black or do your insurgent style thing.  I would try to place your group (I assume you would want to stay together) together however it would balance out the teams.  And there is always the possibilty for third team (shadow squad), but that depends on what is planned for the scenario we will play.

So yes, you would still be welcome to any game I organize if you choose to wear black or your insurgent set up.  Just let me know so I can work with whatever you plan on wearing that day!

I hope this answers your question, go ahead and PM me if you have any questions about attending a future AA game!
