Sick of buying expensive batteries for your red dot scope?
« on: November 02, 2005, 07:48:12 PM »
Do like I did and make it run on 2 AA batteries, heh

I drilled a hole in the battery cover and made a false battery out of a big chunk of pencil eraser and 2 thumbtacks. I then soldered wires to the thumbtacks and ran them out the battery cover. Last was to stick a battery pack on the side of the gun.

The wiring is a little sloppy, but it gives me some slack to eventually stick the batteries inside the forearm. (2 AAA batteries would work too, but I couldn't find a sealed box for those)

I shouldn't need to change the batteries for, oh.. a year :)

Another alternative : buy a quality optic.

I play a lot of airsoft, and I've never changed my optic's battery. Sure, it was an Aimpoint CompML2, but, yeah, I mean, if it was an NCStar, and you just turned it off, that would work too. EOTech 512s get battery life out the ass, also.

Cool idea, but seems like a lot of work (and a high ugly factor) for something you could prevent with due diligence. That, and CR025 or whateverthef*ck those batteries are are a dime a dozen on eBay.

Wasen't alot of work really, about an hour of time.

As for the ugly factor once I stick the batteries in the forearm it shouldn't be noticable much at all.

I've thought about getting a better scope, but frankly it's an airsoft gun not a 30.06, and I beat my gear pretty hard. (And besides, this one came with the rifle, heh)

So far, I've forgotten to turn off the scope twice. You're right, damn batteries are expensive. Ugly means nothing if it's practical, Good mod, Lasavian.

Cool mod.

That (sort of) solves the main problem I have with replica Aimpoints - terrible battery life.

Aimpoint M3s have battery life in the years, and later revision EOTechs are almost as good.

As ugly as it is, it works, and that's cool.

But Chip, part of the experience of getting into airsoft (for me anyways) was imitating real life...  But thats why my check book suffers.  Like some would say - legit kit is expensive!

But nevermind my comment though.  It is a very crafty and ingenious way to solve battery life on those pesky Aimpoint replicas.  Once you get that battery compartment hidden in the handguard it will be 100% A-OK.

Stuffed the AAs in the forearm, i'll post a pic this evening.

There's still a red/black cable running up to the sight, but frankly I could care less. (If looks mattered to me i'd wrap it in black electrical tape or heat-shrink tubing)
