Awesome, man. Hockey's not really all that popular, and I know don't why because it's a great sport, but it's good to see someone getting ahead in life.

Well, I'm back in town, and thanks again for the kind words.  I can't wait to play airsoft again though, that's for sure.  After dealing with some of those coaches, I need to get agression out somewhere ;)

I had a blast!  I worked with a lot of great guys, and we have our share of stories.  There were a few teams from Quebec, and only one or two people on the whole bench spoke english, so getting those bastards, I mean lovely children, to the box was a task in itself.  "16, Slash!"  "meeeeeEEEE?"  "Yes, you 16, sit down."  "I do nothing! YOU SHIT! AMERICAN PIG!"  "Get the fuck out of this rink boy!"  Then Team USA Vs Southwest (The game you see me with the orange bands), shit... lol.  Shitfest defined.  Last 5 minutes were absolute hell.  People heard me screaming at the rink next door.  Both teams just wanted to go after eachother.  The rink called the cops because they were afraid a riot would break out, and leaving, they pushed a few people back from getting at me.

The first game you see me (without the bands), every whistle there were guys going after eachother.  My partner got decked in the face once, but that was his fault, he shouldn't have tried to break shit up so quick.

But the coaches all loved me lol.  Very few of the guys there had a namebar, and almost everyone kept their earguards in...  For officials, it looks more professional to remove them.  Everyone thought I was working the AHL/ECHL, or at the very least, NAHL (the program).  First two are pro leagues, last is Junior A.  Well, time to make a few phone calls and send a few emails.

I'd hit it.

This whole thing sounds completely awesome.  I'm interested on how you first started being a ref and how you got "selected" for tournaments in other places.

Midget, in this case, means 17 and under.

Mite= 8 and under
Squirt= 10 and under
Peewee= 12 and under
Bantam= 14 and under
Midget = 16, 17, and 18 and under.

In the "3 man" system, where there are 3 on ice officials on the ice (or in the NHL, WHL, QMJHL, and a few other hockey leagues 4 on ice officials), the Referee wears the orange arm bands.  Linesman do not.  Referees skate end to end, and basically run the show.  They call penalites, signal goals, and are the head honcho(s).  Linesman call offsides and icing (used to call 2 line pass, but that rule is gone), they conduct all face offs, except beginning of periods and/or after goals... unless asked to do so by the referee.  They break up the fights, they do all the dirty work.  Good linesmen make referees look good, and bad linesmen make the referee look like shit.

Micro, do you mean how I got into officiating, or how I got into wearing the arm bands?  I work at the seminars, a quasi instructor (do mostly paperwork right now, but teach a few things... going to be a "real" instructor next season (07-08)), so ask away.  I can answer just about any questions you guys can brew up haha.

I hope so.  Takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and just getting your name out there.  I have a shot with the CHL and ECHL for sure, but beyond that, just gotta keep doing what I've been doing.
