Gen. 1 Airsoft Gas Grenade
« on: August 12, 2006, 02:45:19 AM »
All mechanics, design, and video belongs to me.

With that out of the way, enjoy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaaywIUXUFY

Right now, it gives a better radius explosion than the escort. I'm currently working on making the radius even better.
I would also like to find a way to be able to fill the grenade and not have the risk of having it pop it your vest, hand, whatever.
I think I'll incorporate a timing mechanism (much like escorts) but better.

THIS IS ONLY GENERATION 1! So your flames, if any, will be taken as advise instead.

I'm hoping that by the end of this month I will have a fully operational, worth-while hand grenade that will blow ESCORT out of the water.

Then I'll have that design patented.

Here are the basic mechanics.
--A and B end caps seal together.
--Fill sealed A and B end caps with pressurized gas.
--Force from impact after thrown will cause end caps A and B to come apart just enough that the internal gas overwhelms the end caps causeing them to pop off.
--BBs go ever where.
--You're dead.

 :)

Exactly.

So it's an either on the spot fill, or I need to find a way to contain the gas inside the grenade to make it stable and then release it at the given time.

I have the whole general idea and the parts to make the timed release. Best of all, it will make the grenade stable. I will place it all together next week or so.

Sorry if that didn't flow well. I'm tired.

PVC piping is cheap, so is lube, and a gas valve isn't all that expensive. I like your idea, man. Expansion because of the heat--if there are different kinds of steel for different environments when used as building materials, maybe they got the same thing for pipes? Whatev. I love your grenade. It looks pretty lightweight and effective all at once. Don't get held up by realism, 'cause what you've got is kick ass.

EDIT:

Since it's lightweight, how far can it be thrown overhand?Added weight'll give it some more control if it's windy/target is far away.

Mmm, my guess is that they would feel it, but the bbs are really only lobbed at the target. I have yet to try and fill it with flower for the explsion effect.

As for throwing, they are lightweight, but they are small and solid enough that they could be thrown about as far as a golf ball.

Anyways, it's not the expansion of heat that makes it pop, its the force the grenade experiences from impact when it hits the ground. The impact causes the endcaps to move far enough apart that the gas inside is to powerful for the grenade to contain, thus blowing the caps.

As far as the cost to make, the endcaps only cost about 30 cents each (Buy about 10, the endcap eventaully will shatter after 15 or so throws) and any charging valve costs around $3-5 (You can pick 'em up at JT) so the toal price is around 6.

It may be a bit difficult getting it to work at first.

That seems a little dangerous cheif. You need to fasten the sides together so they don't go flying so far.

Nothing a little para cord or kite string, and some glue couldnt fix.

I was using a chain back when I first made it.

I tried some nylon string, but after 3 uses the string snapped :(

I'm looking for some sort of a hinge idea.

On a later note, here's some more footage.
I gave an overfilling of .2s a shot as well as some flower.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YolnmJupyXM

I'm definitly going to be moving to something larger in the future. Mabye as much as 2 inch endcaps.

But yes, my only concern for safety as of now are the endcaps flying freely at those speeds.

I have a CAD schematic drawn up and a few paper drawings of a few Airsoft friendly grenades...Some are gas powered some are not, they represent an m67 frag and a Flashbang type of grenade. I Havent built either models but in theory they should work.
Anyone who wants the plans can PM me .

You can attach two fishing lines to either side of the two caps, then when you close them, twist until the strings are tight against them, but not too tight. This'll keep the grenade compact. You should go to the next level and try 2" end caps. More Gas capacity would allow for a better flour effect/more range.
