I have a red dot on my TM (w/ guarder M120FTK) AK47 and i think it looks fine and its increadably useful.  A big problem with at least TM AKs is that the front sight wobbles and without a red dot my AK would be incredibly difficult to sight in accuratly.

(if you want i can post a pic of it later)

Scopes on AKs are not extremely common...grenade launchers are, honestly about 30% of the guys you see in Chechnya photos have launchers on their 74s - they say they use the hell out of them.

The scopes you will see are on the dragunovs obviously, or will be special purpose (ie. nightvision) scopes, like the one above and this one

(1985 era AK-74 w/ night scope)

If you are going to use a scope, then make sure to use a new gun, an old school AK would look out of place - units like Spets etc. have access to the newest guns (like GG RK-103/104, CA SLR-105) etc. The new "all black" rifles which are the latest incarnation of their weapons.

I still think it looks dumb...but they do use them.  To me? You sound like a clost M4 lover if you want scopes, and lasers and stuff  ;)

if you want tips on making an AK variant look realistic - go to www.red-alliance.net for weathering techniques, and lists of real mods (like blue electrical tape around magazines, how to make "royal" magazines, and how to put compression bands around your rifle butt!) :)

ps: see where I got my inspiration for my rifle?

Hoorah for wethered AKs.
Can't wait 'till I get ahold of my metal body :)

Ugg. That NV scope is a turn-off.
I always wanted a "tactical" AK, but the longer I've owned my current rifle, the more "traditional" I have become.

I changed the paint job 3 times on the furniture before I decided I was happy. I was happy when, on the 4th time, I decided to give a shot at Red-Allinace's mimic weathered wood guide.
I did mine the same, just a bit more practical and longer lasting.

I have a scope for my Marui, but don't use it at the moment.  Scopes on AK's look pretty cool... but only if they are as effective as they look.  AK's aren't well known for their accuracy.

I took mine off because i don't have a TBB to make it more effective... Other than that, my scope was only good for scoping out... since it's range is limited, and accuracy is *pffft* by the time it gets near the target.  I used my iron sights more because it was more accurate for the ranges at which you wanna engage and know you will hit you target.  Nahmean?  8)

Here is what mine looked like...

This set-up ran me about $70.
Leapers 4x32 MilDot range scope = $40
Creation Aluminum AK rail mount = $30
