You shouldn't start out with a sniper role if you are planning on doing real milsim. Start out with an AEG and then later on invest in a real sniper rifle if you really want to try it.

tires, we attack. The enemy retreats, we pursue.

Quoted for Truth up to here.  Start out with an AEG, then once you've mastered those skills (Aiming, moving, being stealthy, working as a team, using radios, using camo and terrain) then move on to something a little more difficult like trying to take out enemies by using semi auto, once you get to hear invest in a sniper rifle.  As far as the last half of azn1's comment yes there are better rifles, alot better, but if your on an EXTREMELY Stingy budget (Like mine) the UTG MK96 isnt bad.  I Skipped the middle man and saved myself some cash by just buying the Warrior 1.  Its an ok gun and in the right hands its a good gun but by no means is it anywhere safe for a first time gun, UTG or not.  A good starting sniperrifle is the TM VSR-10 which has recieved EXCELLENT reviews from everyone i've talked to who owns one.  And its cheap to upgrade.  If your deadset on a L96 then Maruzen makes a spring version which will run you at least 350 bucks for something shooting 350 fps, or you can get a Tanaka AICS which will run you around 450 bucks and shoots using gas and can reach up to 550 fps easily.

IIRC Airsoft Arizona games will only allow up to 500 fps, so make sure to check before you buy, because individual rules will varry.  Its also important to understand that the sniper role in airsoft is not as glorified as the role played by real life sniper teams.  Expect to be sitting in one area giving intel reports and taking maybe 15 shots a game :P  That is of course depending on the role you want to play.

If you are HARDCORE dead set on being a sniper then take the next best route and buy a CA M14, or a TM M14 or a G3 SG1 and become a DMR, get it upgraded to 400 fps get a good hop up unit in them (or if its the TM M14 dont touch it, just adjust it) then play that way.  The difference is that a DMR will stay with a squad more then a sniper will, it will also allow you to use an AEG and retain some of the values of a sniper but with Semi Auto/ Full Auto capability.

Double Post, Delete please....
I already have had an AEG for 4 years and have played with groups of people. I just really wanted to know if the UTG MK96 will be replaced with a new or better model. Also, if you wanted to, can you put a tight bore barrel in the MK96? I also own a VSR-11 and a Super 9 and could hit a target pretty well. I'm just looking for something with more distance and impressive accuracy for under $400. I don't want to have a gas rifle, I really want a spring.

The MK96 is a nice gun but its not that nice, yes if you wanted to you could put a tightbore in it and a Maruzen hop up unit but by the time you buy that stuff you might as well have bought the full thing anyways.  Will it be replaced? Its right now the only L96 UTG sells and probably will be the only L96 they sell.    Why dont you upgrade the VSR-11?

I did upgrade it.
I took the weights out that give the gun a real recoil system and that bumped my fps up from 280 to 370. Unbelivable huh???!!! I just don't really love the gun and would perfer something different. What is the best spring sniper rifle you think made?

VSR easily.  Have you considered upgrading the spring for the VSR?  Have you considered upgrading the spring, piston piston head, cylinder cyldinder head, barrel hop up unit or anything else?  The VSR-10 by TM is by far ONE of the best sniperrifles ever made.  The VSR-11 isnt far off, seriously though upgrade the VSR with new parts and dont buy a new sniper rifle unless you absolutely WANT an l96.  Its your money i just think its ludicrous to own a VSR-11 and not upgrade it.

Then by all means do so, dont let anyone disuade you from what you want, its a decent gun but it certainly could be better :)

Cheers,

Hahahaha

That would likely indicate that his parents are:
A. Very well to do and bought it for him because he asked for it, not knowing anything of our sport.
B. Such bad parents that they let him purchase it with his allowance/birthday money/etc. without first asking what it was.
C. Bought it for him/let him buy it, knowing that they would be less likely to have to actually be a parent while he was distracted by his new "toy"
