Holiday Gaming List
« on: November 05, 2007, 08:28:17 PM »
Before you ask, no there is no real point to this, other than boredom and my curiosity.

Well, it's that time of year where software companies frantically try to finish their games in time for Christmas.  The consumer often chooses only a couple out of the many games being released.  I'm primarily a strategy fan, so this season is rather disappointing for me.

Games I plan on picking up:
SupCom: Forged Alliances - This brings the game to what it should have been originally.  The beta makes me cry tears of happiness.
Call of Duty 4 - Could this finally be a suitable replacement for BF2? Demo indicates yes.
GalCiv II: Twilight of the Arnor - They continue to make a fantastic game even better.

Games I DON'T plan on picking up:
Empire Earth III - They took a decent game and ripped off it's balls in the meanest possible way.
Gears of War -  Sorry Xbox fanboys, this was not anything special enough to warrant my buying it.
Unreal Tournament 3 - Just not my cup of tea.
Universe At War - 3 weeks into the Beta and I have yet to be able to log a single minute of playing time.  No thanks.

Possible impulse buys:
NFS: Pro Street - I have never regretted a purchase more than the purchase of the last two Need For Speeds.  I swore I would never buy one again.  However the demo gives me the slightest hope for this game.
Alan Wake - If I'm really bored I might pick this up just for giggles.
Soldier of Fortune: Payback - I miss SoFII sometimes.  If this pays heritage, I might pick it up.
Crysis - I wasn't originally going to get this, but the beta changed my mind.  However, I see myself getting bored quickly with this, so I may pass.

What is going to get your hard earned cash this year?

Honestly CoD4 sucks so bad once you get passed level 25 in multi player.

The campaign was alright. Its kinda short and some of the missions aren't very fun to play. Having a US Marine on the cover was very wrong since you only get about 3 missions as them and the rest of the game you are a SAS or joint ops...buts still a SAS. Its very action packed but sometimes it feels like the developers are just throwing bodies at you. Even so its still about 10x better than Halo3.

The multi player was awesome.....at first.  Below level 25 there are a bunch of good players and lag free games. But once you get above that you find all the 13year olds and nothing but lag fests. This combined with the powerups the game takes a nose dive. Pretty much to get all the new guns and powerups you have to play alot and just kill people. Lag+Juggernaut+Deeper Impact makes people invincible to everyone but the host and those with good connections. You can knife people and get shot a minute later by the same person. Once you get this far all the guns but the M4 and M16 are useless. Pistols will not kill nor will single actions(snipers, G3, subs) because of the above problem. You will also get killed by grenades and cars from well out of range, if you watch the replay you are up to 10ft back from where you thought you were. Your m203 grenades will also vanish 1/2 of the time.

The Red Dots are also slightly off on all the guns but the M16/M4(of course). On the other guns you have to aim slightly lower near the neck or jaw and even then if you watch the replays you will be going "wtf I wasn't shooting there?"

You can chose "Old School" which stops the above problems but there is never anyone playing the gametype.

After this and Halo3 I think I'm done with games. Halo3 still has funny multi player moments but I don't feel like playing just to earn rank and weaponry. At least when you failed at Duck Hunt it was because you missed, not the gun deciding you missed.

Don't get SOF:Payback for PC yet, if you look at the official message boards you'll see that it will need a patch or two to even run.

If I had cash, I'd buy :

CoD 4
The Orange Box
Mass Effect
skate
and maybe Pro Street

But I don't have $60 let alone $300...

Oh, and uchiha itachi, if you shoot your M203 at anything too close, it'll not detonate. Try shooting a wall right in front of you and see if the grenade is embedded in it.

I spent several hours on a server the other night where I was one of only 3 people that were below level 20.  I didn't have any of Uchiha Itachi's problems.  In fact, I finished in second place on my team behind someone who was level 39.  Lag has nothing to do with level, so I'm not really sure where you are going with that.

Not to be rude, but it sounds like your problem is your connection sucks.  You really can't blame the game for that.  CoD4 certainly has it's faults, but I have yet to experience anything to the extent you have, so...

My older brother, who lives elsewhere, has the exact same problems with it. All my other games, including Halo3, run perfectly fine on Multiplayer. After what happened 3 games in a row a few nights ago we just stopped playing it since the problem had just been compounding. I already wrote the game off and gave it to my lil brother.

I don't know how much this costs now, but if its anything more than like $14.99, just rent it.  Its fun, but only kinda, and probably not worth owning.  The story has potential, but is ultimately kinda dumb.  The gameplay is cool, but fleeting.
