SAW
« on: February 20, 2008, 07:23:50 PM »
I was wondering something that a teammate and I were discussing. Which would be better, cost and practicality wise: getting a SAW, or getting an M 16 type with a box mag and reinforced gearbox? I know the SAW is a heavy gun, but it is ment for high ammo output. The M16 is lighter, but has to have some internal work done so it can shoot put large amounts of bb's.

It all depends on your preferences. If you prefer paint ball style airsoft, then you can make a m4 with a c-mag do the same job as a m249, and weigh half as much. If you prefer Mil-Sim, then the SAW is the way to go. Personally, I prefer Mil-Sim. Cost wise, you can stay in the same ballpark either way.

There are two schools of thought "Spray and pray" or actually placing shots I preferr the latter. And its alot more fun, but then the two weapons that you identify have two different roles to to fill. The 249 Is used to hold ground and the M-16 Is used to take ground, this also depends on your school of thought there are players on here that would argue what i just posted. But then I'm old school, It has served me well. ;)

I say if you have a box mag, have a legit gun.  Such as an RPK, M249, M240, MG3, L86A2, MG36, what ever as long as its a saw gun.  I say this for milisim reasons.  I remember when i first started and thought my AK with a 600 round hi cap was a "SAW" gun. also for milisim reasons, my buddies and i are trying to make a fire team and utilize an a gunner with the gunner.

When you find a gearbox that will perform like the one in my CA 249, let me know.

I once emptied a CA box mag in one burst to see if it could handle it.  My battery was hot, and my reciever was warm near the motor, but it worked.  It's essential to know your weapons capabilities.  If your box-mag-M16 isn't set up to handle the role it was placed in, you won't USE it correctly, and you will never be an effective machinegunner.

As for the "roles" of a SAW, it can be used on the ground (bipod), and it can be used as an assaulter's weapon.  Either way, it's a support gun.  It's meant to put out large volumes of fire to occupy, while you or your friends move on the objective.

It's best to have a gun that can handle this.

But what would I know...

Thanks for the input guys. I was thinking that the gearbox in the SAW is the same as in an assult rifle, only difference is the SAW would probably have metal gears, to hold up from breaking a tooth, or teeth. My knoweldge of gearboxes is limited, so that explains that. I want to get a SAW really badly, but I wasnt sure if they are practicle or not. I already have an M-4, G36C, SPAS-12, and in the process of getting my AK-47 fixed. If I get a SAW I would need to get rid of at least one of my guns, and I really dont want to. I bought each one of thos for a specific purpose. I was originally going to go for a grenadier class loadout with my M-4, but lately Ive been thinking about a SAW loadout. Im not sure what to do Both have their plus an minus. The grenadier is lighter than a SAW, but you have to worry about your grenades along with all your other gear. A SAW is bigger and put out alot more rounds, but the downside is that it is bigger, and you cant move as fast with it. What are some of the opnions on here, so I can have other things to think about? Thanks guys.

Like you said, there are advantages to each type of loadout.

I used to run CAG D's 203 on my M4 and I found myself rarely using it.  The place the Grenade Launchers excell is at national games, where they are used to take out vehicles.

A SAW gunner is a bit slower, as his gun and equipment are heavier, but the firepower is definitely a necessary tool for most engagements.

I consider every weapon system a tool, and it's always nice to have the right tool for the job at hand.

i agree with azsarge. i only see grenades and the Nerf footballs utilized during big ops like Lion Claws, or somewhere with vehicles. But you should also see how you play. originally when we were looking to make a fire team.  i wanted to be a saw gunner cause...well i love big guns. However i found myself not playing the role very well, where as my buddy tends to do it naturally.  so we are adjusting fire and working on this.  But again i would look into buying a SAW over slapping a drum into an M4 or something...otherwise you may come out looking like fish! (i hope someone got that) just don't buy a TOP gun.  So in the end it would seem more reasonable to buy a SAW for casual play, but i would think a launcher would be fit for big games. if you do decide to be a SAW gunner.  Just remember you have to be willing to carry the extra load. and your going to be using up bb's quite fast. thats my 2 cents anyway.

I have no problem carrying a big load and using many bb's if I get a SAW. I just mank to make sure that getting a SAW versus an M203, or vice versa, is a wise idea. I attend the larger games in teh state, and know that for a ertain series up in flagstaff, one grenadier and heavy weapons specialist is allowed per squad. This means that either one I buy has a limited use for the regular game, and that dosent seem practicle for either gun. Or maybe thats just my ass backwards thinking.

Go with your play style, if you like to hang back and shoot a lot of BBs then go for the SAW. Honestly though the M203 shouldn't be thought of as a primary weapon, you should use it if you have the chance to. You're just thinking too hard.

Striker, whats your role on the team?  Are you the squad leader or rifleman?  I was in this same predicament about wanting to buy a SAW or Heavy weapon a few months ago and had to sit down and think what was best for the Hawks.  In my case, being the SQL/FTL the better investment for the team was for me to upgrade my comms setup to better coordinate us on the field.  Though I wanted a rocket launcher or SAW both of those would be me in positions on the line that would make me a much higher priority target thus Beans and Boles picked those roles up respectively since thats what they wanted to try.  If someone else is going to lead your squad then its simply a matter of deciding if you want to be a rifleman with the ability to nuke vehicles and clustered groups of folks with the 203 (Beans loves it but has invested somewhere in the realm of $600 plus in each of his grenadier rigs + the cost of the base gun) or if you want to keep heads down so your unit can advance (lots of long term costs in buying bb's but fun none the less).  Just some of my musings, which may or may not apply depending on how close to milsim your team is takign things (obviouosly does not apply if you are a group of 4 or 5 super flankers with a common team name)...

Thats some good advice to think about Kiley. Seeing as how I am a squad leader, I should probably think about sending others to do the fighting, although Im not one of those people who sends someone out to die on the field becauseI want to be able to walk away
