It helps bullets go into dirty chambers. It was added during the Vietnam conflict...oh, never mind. Read up on the subject somewhere... [:P]

It pushes the bolt carrier forward if the rifle isn't in "battery" (eg - if the bolt didn't fully chamber the round).  If you fire the rifle out of battery, well, ouch...

Hey can someone help me? i've read through the manual 3 times over and cannnot figure out what the <b>forward assist knob </b>on the <b>TM m4 </b>does. can anybody help me? thx.
