You can buy a handgun privately just not through an ffl. I'm 18 and have bought multiple pistols off backpage when I was 18. There is no laws against it. You cannot have someone older buy it from a store for you. This is considered a straw purchase and is illegal.
Uhh, actually, it's illegal to sell a pistol to someone under 21, even privately. I just had to look this up a couple weeks ago. It's still done, but, I mean, you can buy meth on Backpage too.

If I remember correctly, you can get around the straw purchase if the handgun has been purchased as a gift though.
Either way, yes it's easy to get a hold of a handgun at 18. Again, I love Arizona.  ;D
This is also true. So long as the minor doesn't pay any money for the gun, it's not a straw purchase. The buyer has to bear the full brunt of the cost though, and the minor can't pay him for it.

About 9mm, lets try not to get into a stopping power argument here, but in most self defense situations you're not even going to pull the trigger because you introducing a handgun will defuse the situation immediately. I like 9mm because you can carry more, and practice more with less price. Size don't matter if you don't train with it. This is also applicable to caliber of ammunition.

Fresnel, they you just have to be gifted the pistol, then give your gifter an equally expensive gift. Christmas would be perfect timing for this.  ;)

And with the m9, my friend has one of them Berettas..... I'm not a fan. I don't like that the grip is practically at a 90 degree angle to the slide. I hold my hand out after shooting Sigs and CZs and the barrel is into the ground.... lol.

The ATF is already looking for an excuse to kick your door down and shoot your dog, I don't want to give it to them. I mean, do it at your own risk, but...

The ATF has no way to track a firearm after it has left it's original owner. There's no way for them to find out when you've sold it. Or in this case gifted it. "Dang, you know I sold that pistol a few months back.... The guy's name? Jerry... Jack... John..... I'm not exactly sure. Sorry ATF!"

18: All non-GCA/NFA firearms and ammunition, privately. Carbine, shotgun and rifle ammunition from a store (no pistol ammunition - this is not illegal but it is very, very common, Walmart, Dick's, etc).

21: All firearms, privately, all ammunition from a store.

Anybody who says otherwise is wrong. Fresnel, etc.

Is it still common practice to buy handgun ammunition if under 21 by saying it is for a rifle, and producing a handgun caliber rifle magazine?  My friends in high school used to do that an it circumvented the "law." Or just broke the policy/law with two ignorant parties? Lol

Since after turning 21, a lot of the 18-21 stipulations I've forgotten.

Shopkeeper's discretion. I've got friends who did it, but when I tried at Wal-Mart I got denied.
