Im going to get an M4 variant.
I gave in, I got weak and collapsed.
At any rate, I have 1 fine stock functional AEG, so i have no immediate need for this.

Reccomendation, should I get a CA and add to it, or simply buy the parts seperate?

I can't put a gear box back together very well, but the other things come rather easy, it shouldn't be difficult to assemble from scratch, should it?

Another good thin for assembling from parts is to get the best of each piece without buying twice, and being able to take my time in the assembly.

Suggestions/opinions?

Depends on how you want to do it, really.

My personal suggestion would be to build your own from scratch, that way you have all the parts you want and none you don't.

Of course the obvious benefit to buying a pre-made one and upgrading it, is leftover spare parts.

I am always a fan of "built from scratch" guns, but it gets expensive quickly and takes a while. If I was to drop some coin on a stock AEG right now I would go for a CA, they have a lot of options for their M4 series and everyone has said they are solid like a rock, and if you are wanting to build another one it is a great place to start.

Just how big is your wallet? That will be a determining factor. Do you like all metal? The SRC line has been doing well just need to change out the gears and the spring. If you want a good gun for a good price and dont want to upgrade it for awhile, nothing wrong with the Mauri. Also Classic army has done very well in the last two years with there guns, and the problems are a thing of the past or a rare happening.

But that'd be the M4 I would build myself if I were to build one from scratch.

Cummon that is a bit inflated don't you think? I mean a bipod on a CQBR? And you would not need a reinforced outer barrel or flash hider if you go the G&P CQBR kit, it comes with both. If I was going to spend that much money, I would just get one of the systema training guns and call it good.

Every AEG I've owned has been built from the ground up, with the exception of my CA SAW and CA CQB R.  Why is that?  Because they damn near good enough to leave alone!

I've only added to both, except for the spring and minor internals in the SAW.

If you want a completely upgraded AEG, internally and externally, go with  one of the newer Classic Army's!

I have spent about 600 on my CQB R, including Aimpoint replica, AN/PEQ2, and a Surefire.  I had priced out what it would cost to build from scratch and it was over 900 bucks.

With many variations available, I would nto buy any M4 variant but a CA.

My ICS/Airsoft Elite M4 Carbine with full stock has been great out of the box.  I have added a Systema tight bore barrel and tried a 120 spring, but dropped back down to a 100 because I was shooting 420+.  Now I run 350 steady, with the tightbore, 100, and standard 2 part gear box.  I like the 2 part gear box because I can change the upper to increase/decrease spring tension to fit the scenario, and I'm not afraid to open the gear box with the separate components.  

I don't have as much range as I would like and will be working on that next, but the shot group is decent and its been a reliable weapon.

I did not know anything about AEG's when I bought it other than I don't want plastic bodies - so I stayed away from TM....  

Now that I get the electrico-mechanical aspects of an AEG better, I will probably build a CQB M4 from scratch this spring to take to Irene IV.
