Silly Idea...
« on: February 14, 2006, 10:24:01 PM »
So, I was thinking, (scary, huh?) do you think it would be possible to do (extensive) modifications to convert a TM Fa-Mas into what would basically be a super accurate sniper rifle?  I mean, with the bullpup design, the barrel is already (from what I've heard) about as long as a standard assault rifle, so if you extend it a bit, add a silencer, bipod and scope, and make it semi-only... You'd have a very weird, but unique sniper rifle. ;)

On a related note, I have yet to take apart any of my aeg's (Don't want to break 'em and not be able to figure out how to put it back together.), so I don't know how the internals work.  This may sound odd, and maybe even be utterly useless, or even really stupid, but would it be possible to fill the inside of the body with foam to make the gun quieter?  Or are there exposed moving parts in there?  I really should just take apart my 552, it's broken anyways... ;)

....you can do that with any AEG.

You can dynamat certain parts of the gun but heat then becomes an issue and you can really only do it on P90s anyway.

Stop thinking.... lol I've seen some upgraded to hell FAMAS but it's usually some kid who's parents pour money into his gun. I think it'd be a cool idea if you really want to pour the money in to a French gun...

It's a cool idea.  I like it.
:)
The thing that would be weird, is if you were to mount a scope on top... i think it would look funny that high off the top of the gun.  But thats just me.

Question is: Why the hell do you want to do it? There is really no point. Do you already own the FAMAS? If not, go with an M14, or an M4/M16 variant as a platform for your rifle, especially since it is so easy to find parts(mainly for the AR variants).

Foam would deaden the sound to a point but only the "angry sewing machine" aspect of it. By the time you figure out what parts you can foam up and which parts you need to leave alone you may find that you will not put the foam anywhere. And once you do, good luck if it breaks! I would hate to hear the swear words jerimiah would utter as he scrapes foam out of your guns inerts, to change a tappet plate.

Now now, lets cut the french some slack. the real FAMAS is actually a very nice gun to shoot, good accuracy and very comfortable. It only has one real flaw and that is the 25 round magazine although I think I read somewhere that they were going to a 302 or somthing like that. One thing is for sure, it beats the holy living piss out of that POS the brits are using. What a hunk of junk.

Why get an M14? Why an M4/M16? Why put a red-dot (or whatever you prefer to call it...) on any gun? Why upgrade anything?  What's the point?

For that matter, why play airsoft in the first place?

Because I can! :P

For one, I don't really care for the looks of the M14 or M4/M16. Two, I can't recall ever hearing about anyone who actually uses a Famas, much less a Famas sniper.  Three.... I don't know, I'll stop because I'm really annoyed right now...

The reason why nobody uses a FAMAS sniper is becuase its not practical. If stuff starts breaking, where are you going to get replacements? Its not like there is a real market for a FAMAS. Also, you can't use a very high spring. Jeremiah will tell you, its not worth it. I like the FAMAS as a battle rifle...but...its stupid to try to turn it into a sniper weapons(especially becuase even the French don't do that).

And why can't you use a very high spring?  I'm just curious...  And theoretically, since I work in a precision stamping and manufacturing plant, if nothing else, I could have someone make a replacement for me. ;)

edit:  To clarify, I'm not just talking about finding some cheap extended barrel and slapping it on there and calling it a sniper rifle, I'm talking about doing extensive (and expensive) modifications to the barrel (and getting a significantly longer inner barrel), and the body, to support the barrel, the silencer, and the bipod.

I think it has something with the motor not being able to handle it, after all, its an EG560, not a 700 or 1000. I'm not entirely sure, ask Jeremiah. The gearbox might be too fragile, so you risk breakages quickly.
