In the future?
« on: June 18, 2006, 10:36:03 PM »
Okay, since you guys got booted from the Prescott AO, are you planning on having next month's skrimish there?  I know that she was doing her job, but it seemed based on ignorance. I don't know about the Phoenix players, but if I'd of made the drive from Tucson, I'd of been pissed.

What if next month, no one takes any gas rifles or sidearms?  AEG's don't spark fires, so that won't be an excuse for the rangers to come down on us.  Maybe someone up there can scout out an alternate AO that we can go to in Prescott.

I know I wasn't there but I'm only bringing this up because we plan to be making the trip next month.

There is a lot of SASCO that isn't frequented...most of it lies west up the hill.   A lot of old foundations, cement embankments, hills....I love the smelter, even if it is full of junk and old paintballs.

Actually they do make sparks. Well actually no Airsoft gun I know of will spark fires? (but anyways) There is the small spark internally for the internal trigger switch. So fill a completly sealed chamber with a flamable gas and fire the AEG.

Point is, Airsoft guns in normal working conditions should not cause a fire. (unless the battery goes up in flames :x )

EDIT: damm saw something like this on mythbusters. Sealed chamber with a gasoline mist and a small spark.I dont remember if they were able to start a fire.

I have a feeling that what the rangers were refering to was that they didnt know the bbs were plastic.  Here in the northwest we have had many cases of forest fires from kids shooting off there bb guns and the metal bb sparks and makes a fire.

I wasnt there nor know the story of what the ranger said.
but I personaly know of it happening(metal bb starts a fire) once and have seen it on the news a few times.

Better safe than sorry I guess.

Ok so does anyone know the logic behind the ranger's decision to close our game down? Was it because of the minute chance that one of our guns would suffer catastrophic failure and explode in flames? Like farslayer said, it sounds like the ranger didn't know much about airsoft guns at all. A cell phone that has a battery that is on the verge of suffering catastrophic failure can also be a fire hazard, but we are not stopped from carrying them around on our person whenever pass by.

Yes, she wasn't informed as to how the airsoft guns actually work. That doesn't matter, because as far as she was concerned, we were not to play that day, and there was no amount of correctness that woulda changed her mind. On the handout we got, it listed the stuff you can't do while the forest is in condition three (which it currently is), which is pretty much everything except walk around in it and like, have picnics.

Better watch out for people with glasses then, they might start a fire if sunlight hits it at the wrong angle!

Ok enough sarcasm, was there a reasonable effort made on their part to inform us about this well before the game started?

I don't care how "informed" the ranger was about airsoft.  If the law says you can't shoot air guns when there's a high fire risk, then she was just doing her job.  It would be incredibly negligent if the ranger let you play against the park rules, no matter how safe it is.

Not playing there until the fire danger is clear. Four Peaks, Bushnell, all of those places are good to play at, even if it is hot.

Back in May we got a visit from the rangers at four peaks, but they were just checking the BBs by request of some one else who saw us playing... when they saw they were plastic they took off. They were really nice about the whole situation though...

Well.. Bushnell has been closed down for a while now and 4 peaks surrounding desert areas (Tonto Forest) is under heavy fire restriction as well.

Ah, I don’t see any Forest Rangers on all airsoft forums do you? From here on anyone who chooses to play or host games this time of the year in this kind of situations should make the effort to find what info they can. As far as AA games it will be dealt with appropriately. Our desert is a great place we should be respectful and understanding to those protecting it. Some info is here http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto/home.shtml but I know the flyer we got from the forest ranger had additional information that airsoft would fall into the description.

If someone has a link that has better info, please follow up after this.
