This is why I miss a lot of games...
« on: June 21, 2006, 07:58:50 PM »
Alright, I know it looks like I'm flakey as shit when it comes to Airsoft games... but the real reason why is because I bust my ass during the hockey season so I can keep moving up.  I've been the youngest official for the past two years now for the District Tournaments (only 30 officials were selected to work last year, 20 this past season) and I'm the youngest Level 4 in AZ (highest you can be in USA Hockey).

Why am I typing this???

Because I'm going to Philidelphia monday to referee in a 'AAA' youth hockey tournament, and I was selected to Referee a game in which Team USA is playing Team Southwest.

After busting my ass for 4 years, I finally got called to do an out of state... hell out of district, tournament (this is pretty rare, incase you didn't know).

Hockey is great, I love the fights, I think its funny how you guys let them fight alittle and then brake it up. Have fun.

There are several reasons behind that.

One is, our safety.  Which would you rather do, try to break up a fight with two guys who are still going full blast, or succeeding in breaking up a fight where both guys are already tired?

Second one is, it let's everyone know that if two guys want to go ahead and start fighting, we're going to let them, but they have to suffer the consquences (5 min major + game misconduct (game ejection +suspension)).  This stops a lot of the "Hey pussy, I'll kick your ass" crap that goes on.

Another one is, Hockey is an emotional game, it lets these guys get their emotions out through blasting eachother in the face a few times.

There's many more...

Remember that brawl between the Flyers and Sens? How would you have dealt with that?

Sat back and watched... I'm a referee, not a linesman.  I don't break up fights to begin with unless absolutely nessecary... and even then I take my time lol.

But when I do pull lines... one fight at a time, what we're supposed to do.  Go by degree of violence.  Find the worst one first, seperate them, get them to the box, get the door closed, start over.

Ah ok, but I don't envy the guy who has to pull an angry Zdeno Chara off of some fool trying to fight him.

Thanks again for the kind words guys... well, it's almost 1 am, and I have to leave for the airport in um... 4.5 hours?

I should have some decent pictures to post... hopefully a fight or two ;)

I'll catch a game when I get back.

Alright, I'm in Philly now.  Has been quite an experience.  Flight was delayed twice on the ground, and once in the air.  We boarded around 10ish, and I don't even know when we got in.  The flight was supposed to be 4h10m, but took 5+.  I was sick the majority of tuesday, and this 3 hour time difference is killing me.  I'm reffing a game at 6am (3am AZ time), which means I have to be at the rink at 5am (2am AZ time)... wake up at 3:30am so I can get ready (Suit)(catch my drift?).
But the good news is, I had one of the best pizzas I've had in a while.  I'm from Chicago, so it wasn't Chicago style, but it was DAMN GOOD!  I forgot the name of the place I got it at, but the neighborhood was um... yeah....

Anyways... couldn't sleep so I felt like jumping on the forums.

BTW... Demo.Man.  As they were stitching my face up last year without any pain killers... that's what I told myself, but it still FUCKING hurt! hahaha.  Thanks again guys, means a lot.
