Of course, now that I look at it, it doesn't look like it would be a very good idea. It said that it shoots 8mm bbs and they were testing it with .45g bb's at 450fps....if we DID use it we would have to put like...a 150ft minimum shooting distance on it.

It's controlled by a regulated, external air supply. The input pressure can be increased or decreased to adjust the velocity.

The cost of the unit is far, far, eclipsed by the cost of the ammunition. 8mm is three times the price of 6mm, and that's conservative.

I dunno how much ammunition the M134 goes through in a game or two, but, let's ballpark it around 7,500 or 10,000.

In 6mm, that's only like, $25, if you buy Matrix BBs in bulk.?

In 8mm, that's $200+, buying .45s, and I don't think they are even available in bulk.

If this was in 6mm, it would be much, much, much cooler.

100% impractical. price, weight, ease of use, extra equip, replacement parts. its unrealistic to think this could be used in anything BUT a big day long event where it stays in one place all day

If attached to a vehicle, it could work. Perhaps the roll bars on a jeep?...

Perhaps, since these guys already do custom work, it's possible to buy these with a 6mm barrel.

EDIT: Hmmmm...the magazine feeding system would also have to be converted to 6mm.

My purpose, and I suspect the intended purpose of this weapon, would be to keep in a fixed position. Im thinking in a "hold the hill" or "defend the objective" type situations. Obviously the fps would have to be brought down to a reasonable level. Ammo is expensive. I found marushin 8mm, 11.00 for 500.
I would be more than willing to pack that b*tch out to the field and use it. Impractical, maybe. Expensive to shoot, sure. Regardless its still way cool in my book. 8)

Just letting all you folks know that it DOES say in the article that the FPS and RPM is adjustable.

Quote from: "Piper's Precision Products"
The M2 HB has an adjustable cyclic rate of between 100-600 RPM through the use of inline flow control and is capable of firing between 200 - 500 FPS.

So velocity shouldn't be the focus on everyone's fears about this new "weapon."

if one has the disposable cash there is simply nothing impractical about it at all.. just adjust the fps to non-lethal instead of less than lethal...

take the $$ factor out of the equation...   there are those who don't care what something costs... (not me of course, but they are out there!)

IMHO
