Looking for a new gun, smart people's help wanted :)
« on: February 06, 2007, 01:17:37 AM »
A year later and i'm still no closer to a new gun :( so I throw myself on the mercy of the forums.

I'm trying to find something that's REALLY quiet, literally dead silent at 30'. I'm assuming you can always put some form of silencer on a muzzle, but i'm not sure what type of "guts" would fit the bill here.

It would be nice if it had more range than the normal M1A1 folks seem to be carrying.

Size isn't a major issue, large and bulky isn't terrific but acceptable.

Accuracy is always nice, but not critical.

Price isn't much of an issue.

Someone mentioned the idea of a bolt-action spring sniper rifle, but I haven't been able to get a look at one to see how quiet it is. A blowgun would be perfect, something like this:

But i've only seen a handful of series references to an airsoft blowgun.

Thanks

I've heard things about being able to make P90 dead quiet.  Paul at JT Tempe would be the guy to talk to about that.

You can make a P90 VERY quiet by using a silencer and Dynomatting the inside (one of only two guns you can do that on.  Saying it would dead silent from 30' might be a stretch.  If you REALLY want silent, you want a gas powered bolt action rifle.  Once you get a silencer on there from 30', all you will hear is the whistle of a BB going by your head.  Even from close, the loudest noise will be the click of the trigger and the bolt (Can't really do anything about the bolt.  That is the one advantage of gas snipers vs spring.  Spring snipers have a loud spring decompressing.  Gas sniper rifles have a click and a pop coming out the front and the silencer takes care of most of that.

Check out the TM VSR-10 G-Spec. It's very accurate and quiet, while still being an affordable rifle that works well in the field.

I keep seeing this line in reference to the VSR10 however:

"But one of the best features of the VSR-10 is it's recoil firing. Each shot is accompanied by a jolt and clunk, adding to the realism."

Is that something that can be disabled, or only applies to some models?

I have no personal experience with the rifle, but I have to shoot an airsoft gun that you can really say has recoil (out side of classics anyways).  It almost just sounds like they are talking about the spring.

I really wouldn't be too concerned about it.

Yes, the "recoil" can be disabled, it's just a weight that adds an extra thump when the piston releases forward. Doing so also increases the velocity by 30fps or so.
