It executed the job that it was made to do.
And flawlessly, I might add.

It's a city car.
It's meant for short and long commutes.
It's meant for gas mileage.
It's meant for the economically conscious working family.

Fun Fact:
You can park two of these side by side, VERTICALLY in ONE parallel parking spot.

Pretty impressive if you ask me.
Of course, this only implies to those who apprecite the "ugly cars that save you money" scenario :lol:

No offense or anything, but people don't buy cars based on whether or not they will survive a head on with a semi truck (sorry for any spelling errors on that one).  Like Boom said, the smart car is designed for city driving, not the demolition derby.  I'm not anti SUV/truck or anything, i definitely appreciate high clearance vehicles after my experiences with sedans on dirt roads (thanks again for the lift Charlie   ).  I wouldn't judge the safety merits of any car when it collides with a semi because in any vehicle, you're pretty much dead no matter what.  Any car is only as safe as the guy behind the wheel and by the looks of it, that guy had to have done something pretty stupid to have that kind of collision.

It's hard to have both.
You ususally need to sacrifice one for the other.

I'm not saying this is the way in every case, but typically, it is.

Take the Lotus Elise/Exige for example.
It's uses a Toyota four-banger but it PERFORMS amazingly (Great gas mileage coincide with great looks and excelent performance).

However, since it is a very small and light-weight car, safety is most likely not it's forte.

Shear size isn't what makes SUV's safer than a smart car, actually some could make the argument that some SUVs are not safer due to an increased chance of roll over.  It's the build materials and overall design that make SUVs safer in a collision situation.  If you had say, a GMC Yukon with a thin flimsy frame it would probably produce the same results in the vehicle vs semi truck scenario.


The smart car satisfies gas mileage, but not the safety for this reason:

Currently a lot of hybrid and fuel efficient cars have been sacrificing heavy duty frame materials in favor of lighter, less strong ones for gas mileage due to the lessened weight.

SUVs on the other hand use strong, robust, frames with powerful engines in order to achieve good to excellent performance and cargo capacity.  Sadly, the SUV has become the victim of the marketing pitch which is unfortunatly a catch-22:  "The roads of today are very dangerous, you need an SUV to survive." This causes more SUVs to be bought, except it is all the SUVs that make the roads more dangerous.

I don't know guys, yea SUV's roll over but you'd have to be pretty far out of control way before that happens. In a smart car all you need is one truck, you know the kind that transport things like food, medical supplies and other silly stuff to change lanes and not see the 4ft car in his blind spot and bam...family of four dead. I'm pretty sure that once your dead, sitting either up there or down below, you'll wish you shelled out a couple of extra bucks on gas rather than ending up a pancake on some road where all the other drivers are pissed at you for slowing down their commute by rubber neckers checking the idiots who got killed because they were driving a go kart on a highway.

Anyway, that just my opinion...I could be wrong
