isn't that just an enlistment option? as opposed to an MOS? a sort of "undeclared" infantry?

11x is an Infantry enlistment option that defaults to the 'needs of Infantry' after OSUT.

this might help:

11X isn't actually an MOS (military cccupation speciality). Instead, it's an enlistment option. The Army does not offer a guaranteed job for any specific infantry MOS. Instead, one must enlist as an 11X. The "X" means that the specific job is not known at the time of enlistment.

Individuals who enlist under the 11X Infantry option attend Infantry OSUT (One Station Unit Training), which combines Army Basic Training and Infantry AIT (Advanced Individual Training), all in one 17-week course. During that training, recruits are allowed to list their specific infantry job preferences, but ultimate assignments are determined by the needs of the Army. Upon graduation from OSUT, recruits are assigned to either 11B: Infantryman or 11C: Indirect Fire Infantryman.

jax, why Infantry?  Why'd you join the band, dude?  Infantry is Infantry.  As for making the decision this early in life, good on him.  That's the kind of kid that earns E6 before his 21st birthday, and that's the shit.  

I've met Infantry E7s my age, and I respect the shit out those dudes.  You don't get to be SMA by signing up at 30 y/o as an E4. :lol:

SMA?  the only reason i didn't choose combat arms again, was because I have other things going on in my life, and going into combat is the last thing i need right now.  And i wouldn't have to think too hard in the band.  and it'll be fun times.

there is no way to hit E-6 in less than 4 years in. Last i checked you needed to be in 4 years AND go to BNOC after that.  now, hittign e-6 in the band in under 4 is possible, but its a differnet promotion system.  and the infantry, from what ive been told is the sloweest promotion body in the whole army, due to the numbers.  hell the points for e-5 must be around 700 plus.

As for time in required for E5, it depends on the type of unit.  And when I said I've met a few E7s my age, I meant 25.  Even in Infantry.  Every unit promotes differently, but 7 in 7 is very possible.

The infantry, in time of war, is and always has been the fastest promoting MOS area in the Army.

What was your MOS before band camp Jax?

jk... the Army Band is pretty cool....  but serious.. what was your CA MOS?
