CA M15A4 Crane Stock/RIS Conversion
« on: September 10, 2007, 11:56:14 AM »
Hey, I'm looking to "overhaul" my M4 (M15A4, if you're going by Classic Army terms).  I want to change the retractable stock to a crane stock, rewire it, and change the front hand guard to RIS or RAS.  I know the crane stock can added and the battery rewired, but I don't know if you can convert the front end.  So my questions are:

1) Can the front be converted from the two plastic halves which currently house the battery to RIS or RAS?
2) If so, what "kit" do you recommend?  What retailers sell it?
3) What crane stock do you recommend?  What retailers sell it?
4) I know a lot of you can rewire it, but I'm trying to figure out how the AEG works so I can do some upgrades myself and start understanding the general mechanics of the thing so I'd like to try to do the upgrade on my own.  Is there a trick to rewiring?

Thanks.

Yes you can put a new front end on it.  King arms and G&P make some pretty cool free floating rail systems (RAS).

Classic Army makes a big crane stock that houses big batteries (4000 mAH ones).  Installing the battery is kinda tricky if you don't know how to do it though so just be patient.

G&P makes crane stocks with smaller batteries, but they're still bigger than a mini battery.

I don't know anything about rewiring  :?
but I can help you with all the other stuff if you do that upgrade when I'm back in town Sean (Thanksgiving).

Thanks Jon, I'll probably take you up on the offer when you're back in town.

Anyone else have any other opinions?  I'm gonna go try and find the stuff now.  AEX didn't seem to have what I wanted, I'm thinking maybe RedWolf?

I was told that the crane stock that came with my CQB-R was a G&P, but I can't really tell for sure. I was able to fit an Intellect crane stock style 4200mAh battery. Honestly though I'm not sure how to tell the difference between the G&P and Classic Army crane stocks.

My friend Shane (Cheeze IZ G00d) has a G&P CQBR and I have the CA one, my stock is bigger and holds the bigger batteries.

If you bought a CA CQBR it wouldn't have a G&P stock on it.

That's a sub-c cell battery, so, that stock is a CA.

The G&P stock uses batteries constructed with AA cells.

If I remember correctly, the CA Crane stock is a copy of the Pryme Crane Stock, and they are the only two that are large enough to hold Sub-C cell batteries.

Just be careful with the RIS, not all have the same Threads for the Metal Body. I just learned the hard way when I upgraded to a G&P metal body and my RIS wouldn't thread on it. I would recomend staying away from a G&P RIS since you have a CA Metal Body. Not sure on if the King Arms one that Pilz posted would fit but it looks nice. You could always just pick up the CA RIS. Airsoftgi.com and evike.com are ok places to order. I have ordered several things from both with no problems.

Can the CA crane stock fit over the original stock tube, or do I need a new one of those too?

And would I need to put a new outer barrel on it, or can I just throw the RIS unit on?  The picture I saw at Airsoft GI shows an outer barrel, which makes me wonder if it's necessary or just an extra:

I bought it a while ago from Havhav, so maybe I'm remembering the wrong details. I could've sworn he told me it was a G&P crane stock, but I am able to fit the larger sub-c cells in there. I guess I just remembered wrong.

You should be fine with the barrel you got if you are going to keep the front site for it., however if you get rid of the front site you will have those grooves showing making it look all ugly, they should have one that comes with just the RIS and no barrel.
