OPERATION BALKAN HAMMER AAR
« on: October 29, 2007, 08:23:51 AM »
Thank all of you for helping us get this first event off the ground. You guys helped us with make it happen from setting up the FOB's to doing the dishes in the DFAC.

The main thing was of course, the battles. We all have our battle stories and I will share mine. That half track is indeed a bullet ( BB ) magnet. One time we drove into the middle of the SFOR blasting away. I could hear what sounded like thousands of rounds bouncing off the side armor. I looked through the front vision blocks at what must have been a wall of fire smashing against the front plate. I was wondering why the five troops that were with me in the back were not returning fire and turning around I saw them all hunkered down almost to the floor looking up at all the fire crossing over the open top. Then killing blow happened when I looked back through the front vision block when an SFOR troop jumped out from behind a tree with an anti-tank weapon and blasted us dead center. We were very dead.

There was the "dog" fight with the HumVees. There was one engagement where an SFOR recon went a little too far and everything happened right. Saguaro 1 gave me the intel of the enemy unit. They formed a skirmish line from our halftrack and we moved forward at a walking pace with infantry support. CT1 then showed up at just the right time to cut off the enemy unit's escape route and that was it.

Kiley's unit stuck with the track on Sunday and we went into battle against the Rangers and the Regiment both giving and taking heavy casualties.

The very first scenario "downed pilot" worked out with us capturing the pilot with literally only seconds to spare as we got him in the halftrack. Rounds started to drop all around us and our infantry that secured the sight were getting hammered but we made it out.

The second scenario the SFOR captured the recon pod. We made it difficult for them to extract it but that one went to them.

The last scenario on Sunday was a frontal assault on the SFOR FOB with nasty casualties. One regiment troop blasted the track with an AT weapon knocking out our armor and squad with one shot. After that, it was an infantry only battle and yes. I actually got out of the track and walked, even ran. It was very uneventful. I killed one guy that blasted Mikey and then got killed myself.

All in all, it looked like both sides had some good success. I think that operating actual military vehicles along with the infantry gave a new element to the battles. Any other stories?
