I have a question that I've been wondering about.  It has been posted on this site that the FPS limit for sniper rifles is 500.  However what I'd like to know is, is the FPS limit 500 with .2 grain or .3 grain round?  As many sniper rifles have an FPS over 500 but when you use a .3 grain round the FPS drops to 500 due to the weight differential.  Is this sat or does the rifle have to have a 500 FPS limit while using a .2 grain round?  Please let me know as this will determine which sniper rifle I purchase as to ensure I can put it to use in all competitions I attend.

.2, and regardless of the weight, the energy remains constant.

You can't use a heavier BB and then take that lower FPS as acceptable.

  are you trying to say that a 500 FPS rifle will shoot both .2 grain and a .3 grain at the same FPS? Because there's just no way.

Yes, I know there's no way.

It's a misnomer to say 'a 500 FPS rifle', more apt would be a 'x.xx joule rifle' because the energy, measured in joules, is what yields the velocity of a projectile (energy x weight = velocity or something) depending on it's weight.

A rifle shooting 400 FPS with .2s will shoot 365 FPS or so with .25s.

See what I'm saying here?

Different FPS, same amount of energy.  And BBs are weighed in grams, not grains.

yes I know that, what I'm trying to find out is it ok if my sniper is at 500 fps with a .3g as that is the round I'll be using and not a .2g, because a .2g would put the FPS over the limit.

You obviously don't know that, then.

IT'S NOT THE FPS

IT'S THE ENERGY

.2 GRAM BBS ARE USED TO ESTABLISH A BASELINE TO USE FPS AS A REPRESENTATION OF ENERGY

You need to measure your FPS with .20s.

The point is to limit the energy, the limit is set with .20s. When you use .30s the FPS will drop but the energy is the same. If you jack .30s to 500 FPS then you will be way above the energy limit.

Just do the math, its easy.

.2grams/1000=kilos
328fps=99ish m/s

1/2(.2/1000)x(328/3.3)^2
.0001x99^2
.0001x9840
.984

im off since I round but its around 1j

Your problem
3g
.00015x22878
3.4

2g
.0001x22878
2.2

See the difference?

You don't specifically have to use a .20g BB.. it says you can use a .25g BIO.

So if your gun shoots over 500 using .20g, are you disallowed to use that gun, even though you're allowed to use .25g?

"To play in an AirsoftArizona sanctioned/sponsored event you must use only Excel .20 or .25 BIODEGRADABLE BB's in your AEG's and GBB's.  Springer's may use any BB since they often require .12 or .29+ to compensate for fixed hop-up.  Biodegradable BB's are not made in these sizes."

Im going to guess that they are "reading" what is posted, but are either trying to split hairs with a hatchet, or are in a blacked out mental stage.

Ok you tell me, what to read.. because I'm reading something totally different then what you're talking about....

I just posted a "quote and end quote" that is straight from the AA rules stating that a .25g is allowed to be used...
