Show of hands
« on: January 07, 2008, 03:36:24 PM »
Who would be interested in a campaign similar to Risk (the board game) spanning however long and using several territories around the state?

Basically, you have team 1 & 2 or however many teams. Those teams begin the series with a number of controlled teritories (probably 6 in a 2 team game or 2 each per team with 3 or more). Swapping control (coin flip or whatever) each team picks an AO to attack a few weeks in advance and whoever wins the territory gets it under their control, if it isn't already. Team A has chosen, Team B chooses and AO. If Team B chooses Strawberry AO which is controlled by team C, Team A would be invited to attack as well and whoever wins.. Gets the territory.

Thoughts, opinions, elaborations?

I want to run a game in February so if enough people are interested, I'll throw a series and a set of AOs together.

Wow thats a really good idea. But you have to make sure you tell people that they might have to drive far, so that young guys like me dont sign up and realize that they cant make it to strawberry.

It's certainly worth a shot. If planned correctly and with a mature, understanding crowd, I could see it as being loads of fun. :)

To make the games realistic, perhaps you could create a list of objectives that must be completed so as to damage enemy 'supply lines' or such to choke their forces up and prevent them from easily putting reinforcments into the field, affect the equipment they are armed with, the intel they are provided with, and the training/experience their men have.  If you really wanted to get hardcore, you could even have the team with the higher casualties resort to using even older/younger 'troops' as they slowly deplete their population.

Also, key points that must be occupied by friendly troops in order to expand your 'country's' territory might be an idea and you could create a map to show the territory lines of each 'country'.

The team with more territories could start off the game with more advantages.  If you really wanted to go in depth, you could explain why a certain territory is important to hold, what advantages would come from holding it, and what 'real' advantages it gives the team occupying it.

Just a few simple ideas off the top of my head. ;)

Objectives are a given, it's simply a matter of what the objectives are (which is just a bit of planning). As far as the bonuses for taking over territory.. Also planning and I've actually been working on that.

So who's caring the board game.  *Insert Seinfeld Theme now*

That would be one hell of a long risk game, could easily last for years.

YES! :P

I was hoping someone would say that :P
The board is pretty big, but if someone wants to pick up the central area of Arizona and carry tia round, that's fine with me.

Pryde from TAC suggested just this thing to the TAC board about 4 months ago, several of us liked the idea with a separate team 'defending' each AO.  Sadly, as we move toward more of a model of using cleared AOs with written permission we have fewer and fewer places to play which would make it like a 4-8 turn game of risk, hardly enough to be an annual league.

The fun factor aside, when you bring competition into it you may also surface some of those personality types that are hell bent at 'winning' at any cost.  Not that its been mentioned but if you did any kind of prize or trophy for the 'Risk' it would likely amplify that more.

As per location, I'm thinking mostly camping areas that are near, but outside of the city limits and more specifically less popular sites.. Personally, I'd love to have have a big war through Charlie Boyce or 'The Ranch' in the Superstitions, but I don't tihnk I could get enough people to make it awsome :P

As per a prize.. I will actually put something up for the winning team, but it all comes down to whether or not enough people are interested. Can't give a prize out if there's no game :P

I would certainly be up for it.

Although it would be great if you could work re-enforcements into it as well.

I like the idea of reinforcements, but I'd have to do it in the battlefield game fashion (each team has X number of re-spawns) because dragging people along that might not get to play isn't cool ;)

as if a game of risk doesn't take long enough already.... :)

Sounds like an absolute blast, make a lot of noise if you get the logistics figured out enough to put this on

Does sound like fun we would have to find people willing to participate in all the games though and if its throughout the state i dont think alot of people would drive to kingman for a 6 hour game.
