Real Steel weapon question
« on: January 07, 2008, 10:23:38 PM »
was just wondering, what weapon is current issue to Designated Marksmen? i ask because i plan on enlisting in august when i turn 18 (sooner if i can convince the folks to give concent) and am torn between trying for SAW gunner or DM...also, anyone here ever been a DM?

**note** i know i should know what weapon it is, but sometimes i see em with M4's and sometimes with the fancy new M-14's..

I myself am not 100% sure as I am obviously not a member of the Armed Forces, but I do know that it will differ slightly between the Army and the Marine Corps as both have slightly different equipment, so it might be worth mentioning which branch you're interested in. ;)

That's why he said the 'fancy new M14s' i.e. the Mk14.

I was just throwing that little fact out there, I know what he means though. Thanks for adding to the discussion....oh well

Anyways, I have seen/heard about DMs just using the m16 and m14 I don't know of any others...

I was just kidding, dude.

You didn't know what he meant, you wouldn'tve called him out on it otherwise. ;)

One of my oldest friends is a USMC DM. It is definately the m-14, regardless of what fancy nomenclature is assigned. A damn fine weapon, too.

A lot of it depends on the mission parameters, environment, branch of service, etc. It's likely you'll need to Qual on a number of different rifle platforms.

There's a fairly good article here: http://www.military.com/forums/0,15240,146717,00.html (even if it was originally published in SOF...)

If you want to see what everybody uses for DM/Sniper roles, you can't beat Mel's website snipercentral.com (see http://www.snipercentral.com/worldrifles.htm for a list of rifles used by country)

Hope this helps.

You don't get to choose anything. Its the Army, they TELL you what to do. I don't wanna be a SAW gunner, but when we go on dismount stuff I'm packing the SAW. As a Private, you will most likely get the SAW, like it or not, after all, it is an "E-3 slot". When you move up the food chain, you'll hand it off to some other dumb private.

If you are a good enough shot, or you get elected to go, you will attend a Designated Marksman school(a mini sniper school if you will). You could go to the class and not neccessarily be a Designated Marksman. My buddy went to the class, he has an M4 with an ACOG on it. Don't think you get fancy stuff just becuase you've attended a class. If your unit has a weapon that they think is suitable for you(Mk14 or M14, or whatever the hell they have) then they might give it to you.

i understand you dont choose, but i was told you can request certain training? i wouldnt mind either way...i can deal with a SAW. i have no false visions of getting anything as the result of a class...was jsut wondering.

You can request whatever you want, doesn't mean you'll get it. I don't know if a recruiter can set you up with that kind of stuff. From the sounds of it, you want to go Infantry, so you should be able to get it if its offered. If it doesn't end up in your contract, I'm sure if you are a good private, and the opportunity arrises, you're team leader will get you set up to go.

What ever you do.. All I can say is make sure what ever you want you have it in your contract before you sign ANYTHING. You will hear this a lot I am sure of it.

As it is if and when you do the ranger thing by the time you finish with all those schools IF you have them in your contract you will finish those schools being a E-5. If you don't finish those schools and you are not a E-5 you did something wrong.
