dialing in FPS? ( spring cutting? )
« on: March 30, 2008, 11:36:31 AM »
what are some ways that we can dial down our fps if our guns are running hot? my 614 shoots maybe 430 fps and several of the guns I'm looking at getting seem to chrono a little to close to 400 and I Don't want to get kicked from a game because my new tight bore put me at 410.

I have seen a article on spring cutting and was wondering if this is a viable solution if you find yourself shooting hotter than field rules allow?

here is a link to the article I saw

Try replacing the spring with a M120

That would yield likely the same FPS.

Try replacing the spring with an SP110.

Actually cutting springs put's serious strain on gearbox parts.  Either replace the spring with an M110 and invest in a tightbore barrel or sand down the sides of the spring.  Thats right, get out a peice of sand paper and sand down the sides (long ways, like you were polishing the outside of a gun barrel) this reduces the strength of the spring (although not catastrophically) and doesnt strain your gearbox parts with sharp pointy edges.  Sand it down a couple of times, chrono, repeat untill you get in your desired FPS range... M110 is probably a better idea though.

I'm just throwing this out there: I had the not so good sounding idea of compresing the spring in a vice for a short time.  Would that posibly work?

great link. thanks. I thought that article on spring cutting was a little suspect. that chart on mechbox.com is really helpfull. that should help get my 614 under the legal limit.

dose anyone know what spring it comes with stock? is it a m130?

looks like with proper spring selection getting the fps within 10 of your goal should be no problem.
