A lot of us use the lat/lon because it is given in hdd.dddd through google maps when we set up gps locations using the sat imagery. Also inputing UTM it into a hand held gps unit takes about the same time, so it is just a matter of convenience, and since google likes lat/lon we do too.

For games we tend to make our own maps with our own grid system. The military uses MGRS, it is the same as UTM but has different conventions. You would have to have maps with the 100,000m^2 area lables to read it on a map.

Actually the DoD is supporting the GARS system that is based off of the Lat/Lon system but it hasn't been adopted worldwide yet.
