m249 recomendation?
« on: January 19, 2009, 08:09:21 PM »
Hey guys.  I'm looking into getting an M249 SAW and was wondering whether any of you have experience with the A&K and/or the echo 1 SAW's.  Any opinions would be appreciated  :D

A&K either still does or used to make the SAW for Echo 1.  So its really the same thing.

I figured as much, basically my only inquiry is why there is a 70$ price difference between the a&k and the echo1.  my only thoughts are that echo1 did their standard china import tune-up, but how does that justify such a large price increase. (a&k 290, E1 360 on airsoftgi.com)

Well if you get the Echo 1 you get a 30 day warranty or something like that.  You could try talking to Ron over at Gearbox about it.  Also there are usually plenty of people selling used Saws that you can get a deal on them if you keep a look out vs. buying one new.

There is a couple threads already talking about these, do a search and might be able to get more info. These are alright, some parts you will need to look into and most likely need to replace, but over all a good platform to build off of.

Also I do have another question.  Anyone have experience with RPK's? I have found TSD and CA rpks.  And to Ron at gearbox, do you carry any brands of RPK at your store currently?

i do know one thing about the a&k version (or at least his) a guy on my team has the a&k m249, and i will say this, i am tired of covering his A** when he is trying to unjam the thing, we think it is the tappet plate ( i think i spelled that right) or the mag. but he is spending half of his time trying to fix it, usually when we need the suppressing fire the most. it may just be his gun but when it does work, we hardly ever get any targets to shoot at, he has them pinned.

I call bullshit on most of that.
All you need is a GOOD barrel, a seal and shim job, (done by Jared at Gearbox), a red dot sight, and a 11.1 lipo.

I have the a&k para and have had only 1 issue, and thats when it continues to fire on its own but theres a quick simple fix for that.

I have under $300 for everything, including the gun.  Lets see,

Gun $225 (shipped)
Barrel $35
Gears $30 (i bent a gear doing something stupid)

Final price, $290

The lipo, high grade silicon wire, and red dot are used on other guns so I do not factor that in.

Also, $45 for fake links?!?!?! Thats a crazy price!  Buy links and some ammo and build it yourself!

ROF is about 18rps and range is over 200' now.  I use a silencer to cover the extended barrel.  If you have the mkI,I want to say a standard barrel is 509mm.  Also the flash hider is very easy to get off, wrap it in a cloth and get a pare of vise grips, it will come right off.

EDIT: I 'saw' your only 14 saw gunner, no wonder.

I feel that I must force my opinions upon this topic  :P
I had a Echo 1 SAW (MkII) the beginning of last year, I had the same problem similar Polie. The trigger contact (I think) would stick and it would go full auto all by itself. That sucked a lot, also the grip on the receiver would go loose and felt like crap.

I recently picked up the Classic Army SAW (m249 MkII) and the Echo 1 ( re-branded A&K) does not even compare to the CA in ANY WAY.

feels solid and was really simple install of the Ebaybanned lower rail. If your gonna be a SAW gunner ( I haven't done it at all yet) I have the impression and mind set that it is not going to be the cheapest set up AEG cost wise, BB cost, and Gear cost.

I do not think that anything in airsoft is "cheap" if you want to do it right and reliable, however I am not a "veteran" when it comes to airsoft in general, so if anyone who is more experienced than me has something to say I will listen

Peace
