Car wax?
« on: February 28, 2009, 05:34:43 PM »
I just waxed my car but it didnt turn out the way i wanted it to.

For anyone who is a auto enthusiast...

Whats the shiniest wax you can get?
what wax protects best?
Anything you can apply on top of the wax or before hand?

I used just basic turtle wax but i want something thats glossy!

I only use Meguiar's wax on my car, and I don't apply anything else before hand.  Just make sure the cars completely clean before waxing

I’m sure you know how to wax a car but incase you don’t, A few tips:

1)   DO NOT do it in direct sunlight
2)   MAKE SURE the car is clean
3)   MAKE SURE the paint is NOT hot. It needs to be cool or the wax can do BAD things to the paint (SEE #1)
4)   Work on small sections at a time don’t cover the whole car then start buffing
5)   Apply the wax with a damp sponge
6)   If you use Maguire’s remember the higher the number the more of a finish wax it is.

I know to some this is basic and I shouldn’t have to tell anyone all of this but I spent a few years as a newused car porter and you should see what kind of damage some people can do with a can of wax!!!!!

strip it, clean it WELL, and then clay it.  After that apply a GOOD hard wax using an orbital buffer.

If your paint is old, strip, clean, and then using some polishing compound buff the paint out BY HAND!!!!!!!! Then clay it and apply wax!!!!

Yea I cleaned it pretty well before i started to wax it, out of sunlight. I did however do the whole car at once ha!which sucked...

car isnt too old. its a 2003. So the paint should be fine. Ive been recommended the Magire stuff and clay bars. I also heard to do a good job you need to get the 4-7 step wax process. I dont know much about this though...

And thanks for the advice people!

this is good advice.
the best thing you can do for your paint is just be gentle to it and keep as many chemicals off it as possible.
I've done a lot of research on car care, wax etc. and next to very expensive "Zaino" (not to be confused with Zymol which is also very good) some of the best stuff you can get is products from a company called "One Grand".
You should clean your paint with One Grand "cleaner" maybe once every six months or so. Cleaners are actually a light abrasive and have a fine grit added to them to take the first few layers of clear coat off your car to give it that extra shine. Cheap brands like Turtle Wax that are advertised as "Car Polish" have those abrasives in them so after you use them your car looks really shiny and you go "wow" but if you don't put them on your paint right all your doing is cutting into your clear coat and giving your car lots of swirl marks (especially if you use an orbital buffer).
So anyways once every six months or so clean your paint with a good cleaner. After your paint is clean immediately seal it with 100% carnauba wax like One Grand's "Blitz" wax.
100% carnauba is all you should every rub into your paint, not all this high tech crap like "Nano wax" and the B.S. they sell at Pep Boys.
And if you have an expensive car with really special paint you should just apply the wax by hand with a damp wax applicator and rub it in with a sideways motion, never round and round in circles so you don't get swirl marks that make your paint look like crap when the light hits it right.
oh yeah and don't forget to wax your windows too, some people do that too  :D

Like posted before:

1 - wash
2 - dry
3 - clay (to remove any micro dust/dirt) (use ultra quik detailer to keep paint wet while claying)
4 - buffing compound with orbital buffer with a foam buffing pad (this may take a while to remove imperfections in clear coat) (see tropi-care website for orbital buffer help)
5 - wax with orbital buffer and micro fiber pad
6 - finish with meguires ultra quik detailer spray and micro fiber towel.

I use Trpi-care products - tropi-care.com ( i bought my buffer from them years ago and it works great )
and meguires - meguires.com
