Decent flashlights for an AEG
« on: October 12, 2009, 08:55:23 PM »
What other brands other than Surefire make decent flashlights that can be put on a gun rail for a decent price? I'm sure theres a bunch but if you could name some you personally have tested or use that would help! Surefires are just way too expensive so I'm looking for an alternative. thanks!

The low end Surefires are not that expensive; you an get a brand new G2 for around 39.00. Anything cheaper than that is probably not very useful as a gun light.

Might be able to find a decent streamlight around the same price. Personally I side with surefire flashlights

The cheapest Surefire will trump the most expensive offering from any other brand.

I won't use anything else.

If you cannot afford one, save your money.  They also hold value and you can make some money back should you decide to sell it down the road.  Good luck trying that with some asian light.

My entire squad uses surefire exclusively.
Used to have scouts but got into the combat lights.
I use the G2 Nitrolon's for work as they are durable as hell.
A buddy of mine had a wicked light that was around $70 CAD, and could max out at 240 lumens.  I'll see if I can get the company name for you.

Personally, I think Surefire is overpriced (again, just personal opinion).

My first recommendation would be a Streamlight, with Inova being a close second.

UTG LT-ZL337 weapon light
http://store.a51tactical.com/index.php? ... ts_id=1789

out performs the Surefire M961XM07 weapon light
http://www.surefire.com/M961XM07-with-D ... crew-Mount

Both lights can be used as a handle held, weapon mounted light, pressure switch, or thumb switch.  Then, you can even mount the Surefire lens caps on the UTG light.

Before anyone starts telling me nothing is better than what the professionals use, I have both lights and have tested them at night games where there is no moonlight.  And my tests and witnesses will attest to the UTG being being brighter and lasts about 3 hours longer than the Surefire.

So, if you want an inexpensive light that has above average capabilities, the UTG is the way to go.

Yes, but brightness isn't the primary factor in determining the quality of a light.  I've got several lights that are brighter than my Surefire.  The Surefire is still a better light than most of those.

XavierMace, you are right, there are a lot of things that make a light better than just brightness.

Beam dissolution - UTG beam stays more concentrated compared to the Surefire M961XM07 weapon light

Beam intensity - From the focal point of the bulb, the UTG has a greater intensity than the Surefire M961XM07 weapon light

Beam concentration - At longer ranges, the UTG light illuminates a more concentrated area

Battery life - The UTG light being an LED bulb sucks less battery power than the Surefire M961XM07 weapon light

Warranty - Surefire has replaced my light when I broke on when it was hit with Sim-unition at Camp Pendleton

Water resistance - Surefire has a tighter seal around the battery compartment and bulb

Accessories - both the UTG and Surefire M961XM07 weapon light can use standard filters and accessories available via Surefire.

I am sure there are more things I can come up with, but over all, the UTG for the price and performance cannot be beat.

What about durabilty though?
Surefire's bulbs and lenses are super tough compared to some other cheaper lights I've used.

However for 50 bones, I'm gonna try it.

The lens took a direct shot from a 420 fps AEG at 30 feet and did not break or crack, the body is a pretty heft metal and I have dropped a few times and has not problems that I can see regarding its function.

I will add though that I have not seen a replacement bulb this light so, if you burn it out, you might have a problem finding a replacement.
