As a Recruiter, I just want to let my fellow Jarheads know Marine Recruiters are pretty upstanding. I've never met a Marine Recruiter that I would consider shady. I have total trust and faith that your recruiter is gonna do everything he can do for you. Active Army Recruiters however will tell you whatever you need to hear to get you in boots.

I enlisted in the Marines in 98 with an open contract, in my mind at that time in my life being a Marine doing whatever was good enough for me. It wasn't always awesome but I was happy just getting to be on the "Varsity Team"

With that, I wish you luck. Weigh your options and stick with it.

It is pretty simple. The Marines are going to offer you a job field, NOT a specific job. When I signed up, I wanted to drive a tank, they explained that I couldn't just drive a tank but that it was a possibility inside a field. You can sign up to be an engineer because you want to be a combat engineer but you might get stuck in bulk fuel, you can sign up to be a Tanker but you might end up driving missles around on a flat bed. Pick a field where all jobs interest you and don't ever believe they can guarentee you a specific job, only the field. the first two numbers of your MOS will be the field, 03 for grunts, 13 for engineers then you will have two other numbers 0311 = Rifleman 03 = infantry, 11 = rifleman.  those first two numbers are all they can give you, the second two you will find out leaving whatever combat school you go to after boot. update. A poolee decided he no longer wished to be in the 0300 Field, now knowing that 0300 is my secondary MOS field, I was granted the Infantry field today, also I requested to become informed when the 0800 field opened up again (this October I believe, I will be in Boot Camp during that month)

Im not marine but I am military (Navy, yes ive heard all the jokes already). I bit of advise for ya. Make sure everything you were promised is on that contract before you sign it. If they have to go and rewrite it 50 times and just want to toss you out the door, it doesn't matter. Anything not on the contract is not a guarantee just heresay and don't me didly squat. Also try to get copies of any paperwork for advancement (not sure if the marines do referal/DEP completion promotes). I was supposed to come in as an E3. Recruiter didn't turn in the paperwork and wound up taking me an extra 1.5 years to get there. The difference in pay (E1-E3) was almost $300 a month when I came in. There is no guarantee that anyone in your recruiter station will be there when you get back to correct it either.

Also, them saying it will be added later doesn't cut it either. Unless they are awaiting approval on something (which should delay the contract anyhow) there is no reason for it not to be right there. If they can't put it in and you can't wait to join, make sure they put that it will be added pending approval so you have something to go back to if they say it wasn't there.

I have to throw my .2 cents in here.

Pick a job you are going to like, regardless of branch, potential pay (sign on bonuses are bullshit), or anything the recruiter tells you. Talk with people who are CURRENTLY doing the job you are looking at, and keep all your options open. If you are dead set on being a marine then good for you, but I can tell you that there are options in the other branches that the Marines don't have.

Oh and a note on MP, be glad you didn't get it, because part of a MP's jobs is urinalysis

Eagle Globe and Anchor is good and all, but I care more for my long term career. It's why I am USN and not another branch. Unless you can't get a good skill out of enlisting with anyone I wouldn't do it. Before you ask, I am a IT.

You lucked out with the piss checks then, I know the MPs and MAs I have had to deal with have all spent their early time in the military doing urinalysis and gate guard. Compared to that my desk job makes me feel like I am a hardcore mofo.

met three DI's two weeks ago, and I must say it was interesting. Anyway I ran an annual IST at Luke AFB and I improved greatly on my run time and crunches, but I accomplished the same amount of pull ups as my last test.  I still have the infantry field with possibly no hopes of artillery re-opening anytime soon before August.

yea i've seen ppl thrown every which way if they don't get their 1st pick. in their field of coarse.  Anyway welcome aboard, maybe you'll make it in time to make it over to this side of the world! hey are you from the Tempe recruiting station. i knew a Sgt. Davis down there, haven't seen him in a while. if so tell him Renz say's whats up! that is if he remembers me.
