Is the m4 gonna get phased out of U.S. service for the ACR?

No the military is looking into it but I think what they're gonna do with the M4s in the military is replace all the upper recievers with a new gas piston system, which Bushmaster makes, to reduce the jamming of regular Colt M4's. More cost effective in my opinion.

You would be surprised actually how good it is but I would still prefer a slightly bigger round such as the 6.8

Where did you hear that?

I can assure you that will never, ever happen.

Again, let's stay on topic.

Also, if you pay attention to the newest weapons system being acquired (Mk16, HK416), they are 5.56.

Caliber-wise, there is quite a broad range of special-purpose bullets out there for 5.56mm.  If you want to know what works, look at what's in use by the folks who have some input into what weapons systems they utilize.

azsarge, most military contractors such as H&K and Bushmaster are offering the military with deals on upper recievers with the new gas piston system instead of purchasing whole rifles, just google it but you are also right on staying on topic.

The "consideration" you are speaking of was an H&K (not Bushmaster) proposed advantage it had over the other two new guns tested in the 2007 U.S. Army competition to address the issues of the M4. It was the only one (others being the SCAR and XM8) that could have the uppers swapped out to reduce cost of phasing out the older weapon systems.

Our military is also held to STANAG 4172 and 4179 that requires all NATO countries to use 5.56 NATO and STANAG (M16 compatible) magazines. This is why you see this caliber and magazine in rifles that are attempting to compete for attention for military contracts such as the ACR and the HK416, a variant of the ladder recently being chosen for the IAR to phase down the M249 for the Marines.

Hmm, almost 2700 for the basic model and nearly 3100 if you want an adjustable stock and extra rails BUT it does comes in designer colors such as black and coyote brown. seems a bit pricey for me for what it is but there is a market for it so it will sell some, just wasn't expecting it to be coming so soon.

Offering and what the military will field and buy and "gonna do" are totally different things. The HK416 is a proven and fielded piston AR with our military in more then one branch (one of if not the only I can think of), I know of nor heard of any Bushmaster piston AR's or uppers that are being fielded with our military.

Vince, I do not have any field experience with the 6.8 or 6.5 Grendel but the human anatomy is usually more severely impacted (pardon the pun) when you are getting hit by a bigger bullet.

I am sure that we could talk about the 9mm vs. .45 debate as well.

Again, I do not claim any expertise...maybe something that can be considered in the future.
