Removing the flash hider on a CA M249 Mk-II barrel
« on: February 14, 2010, 01:26:01 PM »
Gents

I recently purchased a Classic Army Mk-II long outer barrel for my M249.

I tried to remove the flash hider with no success.  If I look through the front of the barrel is seems like the flash hider is a separate piece but from the out side it doesn't.  I don't see the small little screw that you normally find under the flash hider.  So I'm not 100% sure if the flash hider is a seperate piece that's glued on or it's a one piece barrel.  If it is a seperate piece does anyone have any experience of removing one?

Thanks

It's glued in place and CLOCKWISE, not counter. Usually a bit of heat and torque will get it off of there. Good luck and try not to shear off the threading.

Thanks nil8r.

I wonder why CA did it that way?

Anyway, I'll start will some sort of glue remover first and just work it slowly from there.  These things are pretty hard to find.  So I don't want to mess it up.  If it's too much trouble I'll just leave it and look for a Mk-1 outer barrel.

Thanks

Try some PB Blaster on it. It won't ruin the finish either if its ano'd.

I once took a long, hard look at mine and decided there was a really good chance it's just a one-piece barrel, so I never tried to separate them.  If you find it to be otherwise, please post and let me know!

Edit: BTW, the A&K barrels DO have a removable flash hider that's glued in place; I hope we're not confusing the two.

That thing was a pain to take off!!  For anyone else who's wondering: it is threaded, and it's clockwise, just like the barrel.

Care to share the details of your successes? I would have probably taken a heat gun to it..That has always worked best for me..

We locked the barrel in a barrel clamp (so it wouldn't get scratched by the vice) and used an AR multi-wrench to take it off.  You could use an adjustable wrench to get the same result.  No heating required, just locked the wrench on to the flash hider and eased it back and forth for a few minutes to break up the glue.  Once I figured out for sure that it was clockwise, I just spun it off.  There's an o-ring at the base that also tightens the threads.  Hope that helps others who are trying to do the same!
