New and looking for tips
« on: April 02, 2010, 04:23:22 PM »
I'm new airsoft, kinda. I have played in backyards with just spring powered pistols. I would love to getting into larger games with better weapons. I have been looking around the interweb for just a cheap assault rifle to start my arsenal. I was wondering if anyone had a preferred website and/or websites to stay clear of, same with local shops. other tips are greatly appreciated

well, first off - what is your desired price range?

that will give everyone a good starting point for references. also, where are you located? (east valley, west valley, flag, etc..)

price: 70$ is good. I'm willing to go higher if its a good deal.

Location: on Apache Blvd just east of the 101.

What is a good FPS? I don't want a gun to weak  :P

70$ will not get you a good, reliable system if you are looking for something new. For a first gun i would recommend a JG enhanced edition system. I had a 2008 JG M4 S-System that is still kickin with nothing more then a simple jam. They are built to shoot 400fps with 0.20g BBs and shoot that right out of the box. The first 600 or so rounds will shoot hotter then 400 but soon as the gear box "breaks in" it will typically shoot 385 - 400fps.

A good muzzle velocity to start with would be 360-380fps with 0.20g BBs. Trying to build a gun to shoot exactly 400fps is, for lack of a better word, retarded. keeping it 20fps under the limits gives you the piece of mind knowing your with in the limits.

Another important variable to consider would be the weight of your BBs. The following information is assuming your going to shoot above 350fps.

Most people start off shooting 0.20g BBs because they are typically cheaper and arguably offer the most over all range but sacrificing effective range and accuracy.

Next step up would be 0.25g BBs. Using 0.25s sacrifice some maximum range but offer longer effective range by improving accuracy.

Finally (as far as AEGs are concerned) is 0.28g BBs. 0.28s offer less maximum range but offer much better effective range and accuracy. My personal favorite weight to use is 0.28g. They also seem to push through bushes better then others.

Their are of course heavier weight BBs but i would stray away from them as much as possible if you are using an AEG. They are typically used by designated marksman or snipers with weapons that shoot at higher velocities.

Thats all i can think of to say right now. If you have any other questions concerning what i've said here feel free to ask.

i would also recommend JG, they arent ultra high end but they do make great starter weapons. the S-System itself is a very versatile platform, i would definitely look into JG if i were you..

Being new I would stick to a JG or echo 1 before making a big investment like most of us have untill you know you really like the sport. If I were you I would visit Gearbox in Tempe off of 60 I think. They have a selection of guns you can put in your hand a feel em to make sure you like the feel and weight.
If you really think you will stay in the game then think about a M4 gun being there the most versatile and customizable.
I would also say to buy a good battery charger for the batteries so yu dont destroy em to quick. The ones that come with the guns are not good.
