BB Diameter for Tight Bore Inner Barrels
« on: September 21, 2010, 06:17:05 PM »
I just upgraded all my rifles to madbull 6.01 tight bore barrels. I was looking online for precision bbs. I noticed that most are 5.95mm + or - 0.01mm. I found Matrix brand 0.25 gram bb's that are 5.98mm + or - 0.01mm. I was just wondering if this was good, or if it even makes a different in performance and accuracy? Also if there is a big difference in accuracy between .23 gram and .25 gram bb's?

BBs make a huge difference. It's not entirely about the diameter so much as the consistency.

Well, to an extent, yes.  But If those BB's are actually 5.58 like he says (which I doubt) that's far too small.

By bad, 5.58mm was a typo - I ment 5.98mm.

If your guns are shooting over 300fps, try running .27 or .28 bb's. They fly farther and have a flatter trajectory and are less susceptible to wind.

You might see that .23s can out range a .25 possibly, while the .25s will give you a tighter better group.... This is usually around the 300 fps limit though... with the FPS on your gun its probably not gonna end up that way, id say run .25s...

It may be simplified a bit, and not to scale, but this is congruent with what I've picked up over the years of playing airsoft -

You don't really care where it is when the BB hits the ground, you care where you can put it reliably.  At some point, with certain guns and BB weights, you no longer get such a return from heavier BBs.

Raith, that's very nicely done... and pretty much spot on for how it works in my experience too.

Lots of sciency stuff goes in there and whatnot... and what you get for ranges are like that. As you increase weight, effective range goes up, usually accompanied by a decrease in maximum range (which would have to be an average, as reliability goes out the door at the extreme end of your absolute maximum range anyways).

Technically, there's a weight of BB that gives (each individual gun) the absolute maximum range, and one weight that should give the best effective range at every air/weather/temperature condition, and the functions aren't linear (like when you get the BB waaaay too heavy or waaaaay too light, you either can't shoot more than a couple feet or can't hit anything past a couple feet. There's a happy medium that is gun-specific.

But what about the differance in the size? 5.95mm + or - 0.1mm compaired to what I found 5.98mm + or - 0.1mm.

That's probably not enough to make a noticeable difference.

As long as the 5.98 doesn’t hurt shooting out of a 6.01 barrel I might as well get them.

I use both 5.95's and 5.98's in all of my 6.01's

I cant really argue with that, thats a little bit better depiction of what i was trying to put into words. Noting that max distance and effective distance are different is, well something to take note of.... Its one of those things more easily observed by playing and testing different rounds over the years as you put it... Some of the stock chinese aegs seem to brake that model though and shoot .23s farther, thats the only thing ive noticed...

I have found good success in mixing BB weights myself.... Some players wouldn't prefer this as your shots are not consistent with your previous shots. However a .23/.25 mix while being inconsistent some times adds that variable of your 3 shot burst reaching out, or falling short and actually hitting your target in situations where you might have missed. Almost giving you a spread at distance like a shot gun... Something to play around with...

Thank you all for your help, I'm gonna get the 5.98s and give them a try, I shall let you all know how they performed for me when compaired to the 5.95s.
