help on gun, I'm a newb!
« on: December 30, 2010, 05:09:43 PM »
Ok, so I just got my first airsoft gun (well kind of considering my real first one broke within a week because it was a dboys). I got an Echo 1 Scar. I wanted to upgrade all of the following:

Hop up bucking
hop up nub
a new tbb
a new battery
piston
motor
spring

So does anyone have any ideas on things that will work well together? Also sure that these will fit in my gun.-Thanks

You realize that Echo1 Scar is a Dboys, right?

All depends what you want the gun to do. If you want range and accuracy, bucking, nub, and tbb maybe a new spring if you know how to maintain a gearbox. If you want rate of fire,  a new battery motor and gears would be good.

ok I want accuracy. If I got all of those though, would it hurt to kick up the rof? Which of the accuracy parts would you reccomend that would fit in my gun?

Concave spacer, madbull systema or Prometheus soft bucking, madbull edgi or Prometheus tbb, and get a new motor like a g&p m120.

Why don’t you just keep it the way it is and upgrade it when you need to. Echo 1 guns are fine out the box. Just get a 6.03 TBB and get a 7.4 V lipo battery with Deans connectors. And use the extra money for more mags, gear, or game admissions.

When I first got started I wanted to upgrade everything as well. But as you play and talk to more experienced players you’ll learn to replace parts as need. Then when something breaks you can get a better/newer part to replace it with.

Put a tight bore barrel in it and leave the rest alone.

I'm going to go ahead and say this - only put a tightbore in if you feel it doesn't shoot accurately enough.  Its not something you need to have.

Get a new bucking (Systemas are good), nub (SCS nub is the best. H nubs are also pretty good), and a 6.03mm tightbore. (Madbull or Prometheus)  You're better off replacing the hop up bucking and nub compared to just the barrel.

That's really all I would do to it for a while.  A reshim/regrease would be a good idea.  Adding deans would give you a slight boost in ROF and trigger response and is an inexpensive upgrade.

Don't start cracking open the gearbox if you don't have to.

As everyone else said, upgrade conservatively. Why do you feel you need a new piston, motor, etc right out of the box?

Put a bucking and spacer in if it isn't good enough for you AFTER a game with the thing. If you still need a touch more accuracy, grab a nice barrel.

After that, unless you HAVE TO HAVE more fps, more rps, etc etc... which you probably don't... don't worry about anything until it breaks.

Yeah, that's what I meant by it's a good idea.  I'm not sure if E1 does any better of a job shimming/greasing compared to the original brand (Dboys), but I do know that most clones come with a horrible shim and grease job.  If the OP is new to gearbox work then I don't suggest it.

Best upgrades are: BBs (I can't stress enough how much bb quality affects the accuracy), hop up bucking+nub, and a barrel.  Start with the first two and if you aren't satisfied, get a new barrel.

Bioshot bbs are the best I've tried out of G&G, KSC, TSD, Goldenball, AE and BB King)  You can get them at Bioshot.com.  If you use G&G or Goldenball, then those are fine.  KSCs are decent.  TSDs should be avoided, they work and won't jam, but they give poor performance.  BB King and Goldenball are about second in performance. Bioshots are definitely the best in my experience.

I've had my Echo 1 M4A1 for over 7 months now, with completely stock internals. Everything still works great, I've had no need to replace anything. I'm looking to buy an extended TBB in the near future to increase accuracy (which is already decent anyways), but that's about it. My point being, I agree with most of the guys above me. There's no need to replace all those parts on something brand new, especially if they're decent quality parts to begin with. If you want more of a project/upgrade gun, buy something cheap + used and use the remainder of your money for adding in custom internals.

I agree with this completely. Don't upgrade or spend money on parts that don't need replaced. I've had the same rifle (Echo1 SR-16) for years and the only things internally I've replaced after the 3 or 4 years I've had it was the entire hop-up assembly, the inner barrel and just recently the motor. Also went from the 8.4 battery it came with to a 9.6, and I didn't replace anything unless it needed to be replaced and when I replace I tend to upgrade.
