It looks like there is a lot of opposition to this, but it wouldn't surprise me if it passed.  However, it is California we're talking about, so we might be able to escape this for good while.

Is it real, or is it a toy? Phoenix police have responded to an increased number of calls related to suspicious persons carrying assault rifles. The calls over the past few months have involved individuals walking through residential areas as well as parks and desert wash areas. When the officers have arrived to investigate, they have found suspicious individuals who are clothed in combat-style gear carrying air soft guns.

Police are concerned for the safety of citizens. During a recent media event, Phoenix police simulated the encounters to drive home the dangers associated when they respond to the calls and discover the weapons are actually the air soft guns (toys).

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Steve Martos explained, “We realize that air soft guns are toys, but we need the public to practice safety when using them. Officers receive specific training to respond to encounters with suspicious individuals carrying weapons. When the air soft guns’ brightly-colored end caps are removed—as many times is the case, it is nearly impossible to determine if it is a toy or a real gun.”

Sergeant Martos related that in one very recent incident, a Phoenix officer confronted a suspicious subject in a north Phoenix desert area. As the officer investigated, she met with gunfire from an individual with a rifle. While the weapon used was not an air soft gun, Police want the public to understand the dangers they face in these types of situations.

The goal of the Phoenix Police Department is to educate the public as to the proper use of these toys so that no one gets hurt.

I don't see Arizona passing a law like this one in California.  They are approaching it from the correct angle: educate people with proper use rather than forcing upon them what they can or can't do.

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish and he feeds himself for the rest of his life.  Teach people correct principles of freedom and let them govern themselves.

These are  Metal BB guns and Pellet guns. I really will find it hard to see Arizona ever adopting California's F'ed up laws. Not to mention our Airsoft guns are mostly Imported.

Foxnews did video on this today, from the nit-wits who were shooting at pedestrians with some airsoft guns. Everbody who works in airsoft in any way remember: 1)THE MEDIA ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND

You must minimize the power or danger of the guns. Think in terms of soundbytes, because they will slice what you say into tiny bytes, each of which sound the most menacing. The FOX news clip I just watched showed an AEG and a piece of cardboard that wasn't even penetrated, with the commentator saying "...just look at the damage..", and then cutting away to the guy who looks like he worked at one of the stores saying, "...oh yeah, these will definitely put an eye out...there's been cases..."

If you want your hobby outlawed, this is how to do it.

So, we must constantly talk about how it's not dangerous, not powerful, can't even penetrate bare skin from close range, and we wear safety gear so we don't have cosmetic injuries. It's called "talking points", and if the Airsoft community doesn't get wise to them in a hurry, we'll lose our sport. What the media and politicians didn't grow up with, they hate and want to outlaw. Remember the push to outlaw "violent" video games? Imagine how they'd love to get us...

I agree that everyone gets slightly punished when someone does something wrong, but comparing rights like that is just... wrong.

California overreacts to everything, ESPECIALLY anything gun-related. AZ is a very lberal gun state, we won't be seeing these kinds of laws implemented here anytime soon, if ever.
Furthermore, the dumbasses who walk around with bb/airsoft guns in broad daylight (or even at night in the case of the article) get no sympathy from me when they're shot or arrested. They're asking for it by intentionally not taking the proper safety precautions. Hopefully society as a whole can recognize that it's not the airsoft/bb gun's fault, or even the fault of the officer for 'overreacting', but rather it's solely the fault of the person waving it around in public.

Remember guys officers are taught to shoot to kill ....everytime my group of airsofter here in yuma get approached by the law we follow simple rules one be as cool as possible don't get defensive and two as they approach all hands go off the weapons and out to the side there is no need to put your hands up just be cool calm and collective about it and finally follow every lawful instructions/ commands given by the officer...
At the attorney: brother I understand what u mean when you say talking points however it is true airsoft guns do have the potential to do serious damage and while a Walmart gun may not have the power to do that damage some higher end aegs and gbbs do.... just take a look at the guy who had the bb lodged in his head if he wouldn't have been wearing eye pro and it hit him in the eye I guarantee there would have been much worse damage....
If passed it is probably not gonna be influential in any way here in Arizona... Arizona history has always been towards educating the users... plus with as liberal gun laws are already I highly doubt this will fly here....

Just realize that our diversity is ever changing. One thought process today may not be the same tomorrow.  As more and more people grow up or move into Arizona, the majority thought process can change. Just remember Arizona used to be primarily dominated by the Democratic Party up to the late 40's.  So to say that something can't or will never happen is just putting your head in the sand and hoping for the best.

I'm not worried. If airsoft gets banned in California, then maybe they'll move the big airsoft events to here in AZ.
