Creative Face Protection

I am just getting into airsoft. I used to paintball heavily a few years back and I realize that some aspects cross over to the airsoft side and others do not. I am curious to hear from the more experienced and creative members out there; how do you go about protecting your face? In paintball there was one option wear a paintball face mask. I figure that using a similar mask would offer the most protection but I think I want to be able to get my face as close to my gun as possible. So what do you do or what have you done? What are the pro's and con's?

Wire mesh mask + WileyX prescription sunglasses for me.  You can pick up a mask for about $20 at Gearbox.

The nice thing about the wire mesh is that you can bend it to conform to your facial structure... and it doesn't fog up.

Some people don't use face protection at all. I've seen a couple people use a sports mouth guard to protect their teeth.  In the cooler months I use a MICH helmet, small ballistic goggles, and usually no face protection. I have also seen a canvas type face protector, and neoprene face protectors. Although the neoprene face protectors I have tried, and they are extremely hot, sweaty, foggy, and uncomfortable. Also shemage's, alot of people use those.

I have a mesh face mask, similar to shadow's, but I don't use it that often, it annoys me having the extra strap go around my head. Although I am slightly afraid of getting a tooth broken, so I am still looking for something I like better.

...Although I am slightly afraid of getting a tooth broken, so I am still looking for something I like better...

I took a shot to the nose at about 25 feet at RD2 and it didn't even scratch the mesh.

I wear the same thing that shadow wears but with goggles. After time it tends to seperate the mesh from the cloth but you can just glue it back together with no problems. They work perfectly fine and well worth the money if you don't want your tooth shot out. Some people do complain about bb fragments when a bb strikes the mesh but I've been shot in the face while wearing the face protector from 10 feet in Vangaurd with their old and new bb's and never had a fragment problem but then again it is 330 fps although I don't think that matters much when it comes to bb quality and I've also been shot from the same distance in the face with a wire mesh face protector on outdoors and from personal experience I know his gun is shooting 350 fps with .25's and I still didn't have bb fragment issues. In my opinion those wire mesh face protectors are great for indoors and outdoors and it saves your teeth. With it being able to conform to your face and still being low enough to look down your iron sights/red dot whatever you have, is well worth them money.

I've had fragments.

I've felt them twice. Once was from a pistol at 3ft- due to a guy on my side not shutting the f' up and telling them what I was doing. Another time was at Vangaurd. I have a V2 mask, so when it catches a groove they can fragment.

@ Exarach:
that thing would make it almost impossible to use the sights or scope on a gun.
i can barely use a paintball mask and that thing is bigger.
granted it looks cool, but i feel it would hinder more then help.
have you tested it yet? are there vent holes to help prevent fogging?

That mask would be bad ass but I agree with spazz, personal shooting taste would get in the way for me.

Not yet! All I can cast currently are small useless pieces, copies of others. Trying to work out a front guard from scratch is going to be a challenge. I am considering doing it in 3 parts that fit together, and yes... there will be vents lol. I absolutely despise fogging masks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they used to call you Chip in the old days :p

Anyway at the moment I don't use face protection, I just take the hits and keep playing. But back in the day I used to have a half face neoprene mask that provided a little protection, but fogged me up something fierce.
