New Gun

Hello everyone,

I haven't played airsoft for years, but I am looking to get back into it.  I stopped playing when my last airsoft gun fell apart, so I am in need of a new gun.  I can imagine things have changed as far as quality and price goes so I wanted to ask your opinions about what brand I should settle with.  So far, after searching the forum, I can see that KWA and G&P seem to be touted the most; I have been checking those brands out lately and I am interested in a G&P AK47:

What do you guys think?  Has anyone owned this gun before?  From what I have heard, G&P seems to have good quality right out of the box.  I would also like to improve the accuracy and distance with a longer tightbore inner barrel; would this be a good idea, or do you think it is unecessary?

Dont get a KWA unless you dont plan on upgrading... They are very proprietary.

But as far as i know, almost all G&P products are great stock. That particular gun just came out a few days ago i think, so i doubt anyone has done a review yet. Nevertheless, it is a G&P so you could expect a good gun.
As far as getting better accuracy and range, get a Prommy tightbore (or madbull if on a budget) and r-hop, as well as fine tuning the hop-up

A promethesis barrel is only good as long as the teflon coating is  in there. Once the bb's rub it off oh well.

im glad you mentioned this. i was thinking about getting one for that DMR, spazz is building for me.

Just use a mad  bull 6.03 tbb. I have them in all my guns. Work pretty Damn good.

Heh, make sure you stay away from anything that would scratch that inner diameter.

one scratch and Ur gunna start peeling that teflon, once that happens get ready for jam after jam after jam..

I just looked at the evike site and to tell you the truth I don't like the looks of that AK. I would go with the m4 platforms,so much more you can do with them. I have a kwa cqb that was converted to full size m4 with AK 6.03 tbb and it has some good range with 370fps on .25's. With a little dremmel  work you can switch out the hop-up and do whatever.

ummmm, since when did prommy stainless barrels come with a teflon coating?
i know km and a couple other brands have teflon coated barrels, but unless prommy is doing something new they are just polished stainless, with some of the best tolerences on the market. as far as scratching a teflon barrel, the same thing will happen if you scratch an aluminum barrel.
what ever tbb you get, you dont realy need anything longer then the ak length (455mm).
full cylinder volume doesnt realy go much higher then that.

Yeah, I haven't seen a teflon coated Prommy barrel.  KM, Madbull, and JBU are all coated.

The Mad Bull and JBU barrels are Housed an Inodized aluminum coating.

the km "teflon" is a teflon coated barrel, And so is the Promethious ASH and its been out For ever!!!.
Its STAINLESS too.

And no spazz, If you scratch an aluminum barrel a Simple run thru it with Polishing compond with remove them, try that with ur teflon.

And actually the barrels make it quite east, they got the measurements on the package!

I was once schooled by Dwayne dees the maker/designer of DBC/PCT barrels and i can proove this very easly.
In my Mind the whole 455mm thing makes No sence.

the same exact volume of air is in a full cilinder as there is In a 510mm barrel.


So if a full cilinder matches a 510mm barrel perfectly, WHy would you get better results from a shorter barrel? I can see if your Using a Type 1 or 2 ported cilinder, then ull get Suck back, Or loss of consistancy and general loss Of fps. but the 455 matches a type 3 Or 4/5th ported cilinder

The only gain i would see from a Unmatched cilinder and barrel set, such as the Unported cilinder and a 455mm barrel Is Even more turbulance when the bb's Exit out of the barrel.
Somthing about all of that Extra air Shooting past the bb as soon as it exits the barrel Doesn't Some ohh soo.. Right to me. Probably causes something called uhh... Speed wobbles! turbulance, W/e you want to call it.
Yeah a ported barrel will fix this problem(supposedly) But in all of my experiences and the experiences i'v read say there Worthless.


 Pleasy explane why The 455mm barrel is better, If the full type cilinder can be matched with up to a 510mm barrel By cilinder to barrel syncronization?

Regardless of the manufacturer, I believe I am going to purchase some kind of AK-47 model; I've always liked AK-47's and I have been using them since I started airsofting years ago.  Specifically though, I am looking for an AK-47 that is modernized, if you will; the features that I desire the most are the crane stock and the RIS/Rail system.

Along with the G&P AK-47, I also found the following:

This is a CYMA AK-47 with a crane stock and RIS/Rail system which extends to the stock of the gun which is a big plus:

My concerns are the following:

-With an RIS/Rail that does not extend to the stock of the gun, will I have issues looking through a red dot that is mounted above the hand grip?
-With a crane stock, what kinds of batteries am I limited too?  I am considering LiPo, but I am not sure if it would be beneficial for me.  Right now I am leaning towards a 9.6v NiMH; would this fit ok in a crane stock?

Lastly, with all of the ranting and raving about G&P... I can't lie when I say I have developed some doubts:

Reason #1 - I must have checked 15 different airsoft websites and I found only TWO that had a decent G&P listing; and I have only found the previously mentioned G&P AK-47 model at Evike, and nowhere else (perhaps because it is new?  I checked G&P's main website and I could not find the same model being offered either).  If G&P is a great brand, why the lack of listings?

Reason #2 - I have heard of G&P having gear and piston issues; anyone have any details on this?  I don't mind if they have had issues... as long as they have been corrected in newer models.  I've been lead to believe that this is not the case as plenty of G&P owners have been running their guns for years without even cracking open the gear box.

Couple more things about the final choice.  I've decided to run with a Madbull TBB and I'll be looking into higher quality hop-up units.  Also, some of my requests may be irrelevant due to the fact that I want to replace some of the external parts with their Desert Tan counterparts (never-the-less the information is important to me, so I appreciate your responses).  Should I be looking at entirely new pieces or should I save some money and paint my externals (is this easy to do on my own or should I be paying someone to do it)?

Again, I know these topics can be a bit redundant... but thanks for all of your input.

LOL, I've never used one of their ASH barrels and completely forgot about them.

I guess "coating" isn't a technically accurate word for the anodizing process on the Madbull/JBU barrels but they have been known in the past for having flaking issues.

Good luck with your gun search, but I would recommend straying from Airsoft Megastore. I have received 3 broken guns from them and they have crappy customer service.

Thanks, I will take note of that.  May I ask what stores that you shop from or you feel are most reliable?
