Have a couple questions regarding Airsoft in general
« on: June 20, 2012, 11:19:46 PM »
Personally I have never looked into Airsoft nor ever fired an Airsoft gun, but a friend of mine recommended using an air pistol to practice for IDPA & USPSA matches because I am not 18 and cannot go to the shooting range without a parent present at the time (bummer I know tell me about it). So here are some of my questions....

  • First of what would be the most realistic type of Airsoft, I would prefer it to be as close to a 1911 because that is what I use for single stack competition.
  • Can after market sights or grips be installed on Airsoft guns?
  • Would a holster for a REAL 1911 work for a Airsoft look alike? [li/]
I'm looking for something that would be the closest to the looks of a 1911 ( Same hold, same sights, and same safety location.) I am not looking reviews on how it will work in Airsoft competitions or whatever (Sorry don't take offense I have no clue on the vocab) I need a simple semi-automatic 1911 that I can use when I don't have someone 18+ to take me to the range.

Edit: I am not bringing an Airsoft gun onto a live range, I am using my backyard for any airsofting.

Dont buy an airsoft gun to use at the range. Just shoot in your backyard
I use to airsoft, then I took a BB to the knee.

Ya I know not to use an Airsoft gun at the range. I would mostly setup possible stages in my backyard!

Google kwa ptp m1911 training pistol and check it out, I have one and it is quite good for stock practice...

I also have a similar 1911 clone with a C-More Serendipity sight on it and I really like it... My eyes are not sharp enough any more for a stock class pistol...
I am just a chalk line on the sidewalk waiting for the next rain to wash me off...
For the time I am here I am what I am...

Second on the KWA PTP. WE 1911's are a bit cheaper.

Grips, yes. Sights, not so much.

Yes.

this is what you want to set up to practice the real steel style shooting that you want to compete in right? as you will see in this vid it can and is done, just not stateside.
feel free to get ahold of me and i will do my best to point you in the right direction for what you want.

Airsoft IPSC HKASA SHOOTERS

many comp shooters in hk and japan are use the tokyo marui  1911 and ksc sti series guns.
at least that is what i see most of them building their guns out of.
also the tokyo marui 1911 and the ksc sti series guns have lots of upgrade parts for them.

Two big questions are what's your budget and are you looking for a gun you can tinker with and upgrade or do you want something that will just work.

You are hard to beat the above mentioned KWA PTP series for build quality and feel (they are single stack replicas) but if you are looking for one you can tinker with or turn into a race gun, a TM is going to be the way to go.

Honestly airsof isn't going to prepare you for shooting a real .45ACP 1911. Just watch on how to hold a gun and shoot it for now and save up for ammo. The best become the best because they shoot thousands of rounds with their real gun.

it wont fully prepare him but it will help him practice his form, which is one of the most important parts of compitition shooting. and i believe that is what he is looking to do. he wants something he can practice his form, movements and target aquisition with in his back yard since he cant just go to a range by himself cause he is underage.

This is exactly what I meant! I struggled with target acquisition  I ended up going to the local hardcore Airsoft store and bought a M1911 MKIII PTP by KWA. Crazy how realistic the gun is, now I can understand tragic accidents involving LEOs and kids with airsoft guns. The only thing I need to to is change the front sight to a Dawson Precision fiber optic sight. Funny how I went to get an Airsoft to escape the underage conundrum to get hit with the 18+ to buy green gas. Needless to say I got someone 21+ and bought 10 canisters of green gas and 5,000 6mm BBs. Everyone I met and talked to in the store and online forms has the utmost respect and courtesy, I might even look into getting a rifle now!

Buy a propane adaptor online or locally and you'll be set.

I'm glad to see that you've been turned onto airsoft. I've heard that JJ Racaza uses airsoft guns to practice much in the same way you do. Of course as someone said a lot of the gear for real firearms will work for airsoft guns, I've used my SERPA for my WE 1911 and it fit a Springfield Armory Range Officer 1911 just fine. If you look at a lot of the gear loadouts, you'll see a lot of guys using legit gear because the sizing is almost exactly the same, I use Fast Mags, Magpuls, and surefire gear to hold a lot of my airsoft stuff.
