Hey there guys!
Its me again, coming to you with another crazy gun project!
Its a Thompson!
BUT DONT TURN AWAY YET!
I have always liked the look and feel of the Thompson, but they are pretty much non-existant ont he field, outside of WW2 only events, and the occasional pickup.
Many things have to do with this, including it being outdated,no rail space, heavy, and a bit awkward. However, it is a good design from an AEG standpoint:
It uses,
1. The Ultra reliable and easy to work on Ver.6 gearbox
2. The mag release is controlled by the thumb on the pistol grip, no need to move your hand.
3. Mags hold a great deal of ammo, and are all metal
4. Lots of room in the shell
5. Woooooood
These are just a few of the perks I could pull off the top of my head, and they are definately advantages, however, to counter this,
1. Awkward to use, Long and heavy
2. Barrel is weakspot, breaks often
3. Not a lot of replacement body parts
4. Controls are awkward
WHERE am I going with all of this?
Im builing a new Thompson hahah.
While at Op:Red Storm this weekend, I saw something that really smacked me in the idea case, and it gave me a sweet idea.
A player had made a suppressed version of the Thompson, and it actually looked pretty good. However, For me that didnt really solve many of the issues I had with the gun,
Including that it still really looked like it had been made in WW2. SO, I came up with some crazy designs and penned them down on paper.
And got this!
A shortend, suppressed usable rifle that looks like it belongs in the 20th Centry!
So without further comments. Here is my next build thread, enter the Forward Assault Pistolized Rifle, or FAP-R for short. (I also like the Sub Thompson, or the Assault Service Specialized Home Made Rifle (ASSHMR). Hahah....were going to work on the name....
any comments and suggestions are welcome. And here we go!
*********************************************************************
I picked up a Marui Thompson for this project, and it will serve as the base gun.
It actually saved me some time, because in typical Marui superior quaility and design, the barrel had already snapped off. I havent started in on the gearbox parts yet, but I have already ordered a new tappet, and some metal bushings in marui's "Oval" style...
The previous owner had fixed up marui's genius design with about three inches of JB weld, to reattach the barrel.
I dont know if you can see it, but the barrel was actually put back on at an angle, which would have been fun if I wasnt already tearing it all down anyway.
Thanks be to Dremels. And hand files. Pieces are apart.
Some nice trades..
As you can see, the body is finally begining to see an end of that JB weld, and actually coming out quite nicely.
Some sandpaper and a soak to clear off the debris, and shes looking good!
Letting my body dry out, planning on continuing the work tonight!
More pics to come.
Heres some proof of concept for the design. I am still debating suppressor length, whether or not to make it flush with the barrel,
and if I should leave the sight as is, or replace the rear sight with a small rail for reddots.
